However, that Sunday afternoon changed everything. When Maggie cried as she answered Forsythia’s questions about Levi, he knew that there was something more that Maggie hadn’t said to him.

Cyrus seemed to think something was going on with Maggie, and so did Forsythia. If they could see it, not being close friends to Maggie, why hadn’t Levi sensed it at all?

And what am I supposed to sense?

Maggie had been there for him all year long. Maggie had helped him through his breakup. Helped him come to his senses. Even helped him get his dream date—which he realized now had been the wrong move.

Of all the people in the world, Maggie was the person Levi most enjoyed being with. This same Maggie would be moving out of state and out of reach.

Levi found himself thinking that he couldn’t let her go.

Sipping water, his eyes glanced in Maggie’s direction. Surprised to find Maggie looking his way. She smiled a little and her slight dimple showed under the light.

Somehow the smile had a sad note to it.

Why, Maggie? What are we missing?

Levi finished his pasta and checked his phone for the time. An hour and a half left before the Christmas concert would begin in the Midtown Chapel sanctuary. He could leave now but…

He texted Maggie. He waited for her to reach for her purse. She always answered his messages.

Levi

Do you have a ride to the concert?

Maggie

Yeah. I drove myself.

Levi

When are you leaving?

Maggie

Not sure. You?

Levi

Playing it by ear.

Maggie

Staying for dessert?

Levi

IDK.

Maggie

You don’t know? You always know.

Levi grinned. No, he didn’t know anything anymore. He had almost always been sure of himself, until Soline threw him a curveball. Then with Maggie and Malachi’s help, he regained his bearings. Even ventured out to try to date again. That failed, but he wasn’t unhappy about it. It was a good thing that it didn’t work out with Forsythia.

Now, looking at Maggie, he was starting to lose his confidence again.

They had a beautiful friendship going. He wanted to preserve it.
