If he told her that his heart had closed her out because he felt that she was too precious for his messy life, that would have been true, but what kind of response would Maggie have to that confession?

If she had fallen in love with him due to sheer proximity with him, she would respond positively to him trying to break out of their friend and family zones.

If she was only really a caring friend with an acute empathy in her personality, then she might retreat from him and it would ruin their friendship.

Which category was she in?

How could he find out?

If he talked to Cyrus again, his cousin would probably say, “Go ask her already. Let the chips fall where they may.”

Levi could lose a close friend or he could gain a…girlfriend?

Oh, he couldn’t imagine Maggie being his girlfriend. That would be unexpected. What would Malachi say about that?

The server came to fill his glass with water and ask if he wanted dessert.

Levi decided to indulge. He knew that Maggie’s favorite dessert was strawberry shortcake with two scoops of ice cream on top. Did he want the same?

In fact, he knew a lot about her. The same questions that Forsythia seemed to have asked Maggie on Sunday, Levi knew that he could answer the same for Maggie.

Maggie’s favorite color? Purple.

Time of day? Dawn.

Christian song? Also “Resurrecting.” She had made it her ringtone for some months before she changed it to bird songs.

Christmas carol? She liked them all, especially “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” and “Mary, Did You Know?”

Her favorite season? Spring when the flowers bloomed.

Fruit? Apples.

And her favorite vacation place? At home, same as Levi’s.

There was nobody else in the world whom Levi knew more about than Maggie. It had to be because they’d spent almost a year together at work and after work. He wouldn’t be surprised if Maggie had started to develop feelings for him.

As for him, he was fighting it. The more he looked at Maggie, the more…

In love he was?

Levi wasn’t entirely sure.

One thing he knew: he didn’t want Alden anywhere near Maggie.

After he had placed his dessert order with the server—making sure to tell her to put the two scoops of ice cream in a separate bowl on the side—he chatted with the people to his left and right. He might forget their names next week or in the new year, but he didn’t want to come across as aloof or anti-social.

Levi was used to making small talk at church with people he came across in the hallways or in the dining room. In a mega church such as Midtown Chapel, it was hard to meet and knoweveryone. Which made his friendship with Maggie—and her brother, for that matter—special.

As he was talking away, he noticed that Alden got up from his seat and went over to Maggie.

What does he want?

A small red box with ribbons on top appeared in Alden’s hand, and Levi’s heart skipped a beat.

What are you giving her?

Levi couldn’t hear what Alden said to Maggie. She smiled, took the box, and placed it on the table next to her plate of dessert.
