Chapter Fourteen

Levi had been extra helpful and extra sweet this week, and he had paid for their lunch at Whole Foods, even when Maggie protested all the way through dessert.

“You want me to owe you, don’t you?” Maggie took a spoonful of the bread pudding and pushed the bowl to Levi. “All yours.”

“I don’t want you to leave Atlanta…” Levi looked at the pudding and then at Maggie. “Or me.”

Maggie stared at him. What did he mean by that? She waited for him to say more. She knew that if she waited long enough, he’d come forth with all the clarifications.

Whole Foods was crowded. The dining tables were next to the busy checkout counters with only a low wall separating the crowd of Saturday shoppers and their table. There was no privacy.

Maggie wasn’t surprised when Levi didn’t answer her.

“Let’s talk at home,” he finally said.

“Home?”

“I mean your house.”

Maggie sighed. “Technically, it’s my parents’ home, but it won’t be much longer unfortunately. I’ve already told you that they want to sell it since they’re never coming back to Atlanta.”

Levi’s phone rang, but he didn’t pick it up from the table. It was turned over with the back of the casing facing up. “I’ll check my voice mail after our lunch.”

“It’s okay to take the call. Might be important if someone calls you on a Saturday.” Maggie said that because she was curious about the caller.

Levi turned the phone over. Maggie could see a woman’s name. Sally.

She decided not to speculate. Both of them had male and female friends. No biggie.

“I’ll be right back.” Levi went outside the café to take the call.

That told Maggie something. He didn’t want her to hear their conversation.

Whatever. She didn’t have to care anymore. She was moving away for good.

Maggie checked her own phone. Texted Malachi to tell him that the movers had left.

Levi returned quickly. Said little as he finished dessert.

Maggie sipped water through a straw as she watched him.

“Anything I can help with?” she finally said. “Like I could do one last matchmaking project or something?”

She was halfway joking. Truly she was done with helping Levi find his “one true love” or whoever. Who did that in this day and age? Didn’t they have apps for that sort of thing these days?

Jokes aside, Maggie believed that the only person who could find Levi’s partner for life was God. Not Maggie or Levi himself or anyone else.

Levi gave her a look that said, “What?”

“Sorry for the mess in the last go-round.”

Levi chuckled. “No, the person who needs to apologize is me. I put you through a lot, Mags. I’m very sorry.”

Maggie almost shrugged, but his apology was so genuine, she felt that she needed to take it seriously. “Everything is a learning experience in God’s economy.”

Levi put his fork down in the empty bowl. “I found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with.”

Maggie nearly spluttered out water. “Really? Who?”
