Could it be Sally, the person who just called him? She was afraid to ask. She wiped her mouth with a paper napkin.

“I’m praying about it so I don’t want to scare her,” he said quietly.

“Makes sense. Don’t be rash.” Maggie waited.

“For sure.”

“A life partner is possibly the future mother of your children,” Maggie added.

“Right. How do you know if someone is the right person for you?” Levi asked. “I’ve failed in my relationships.”

“God will show you,” Maggie said as though she had any authority. She didn’t, and she knew it, but she had heard enough sermons and read enough Bible to know that God was compassionate and will answer His children. “Pastor Kim preached on knowing God’s will and making requests of Him in 1 John 5:14-15.”

Maggie swiped her phone and read the verse aloud.

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

“What if God has already shown you, and you ignored Him?” Levi asked. “I mean, speaking for myself, of course.”

“My dad—who is a pastor too, as you know—would say that we need to get on our knees and repent before the Lord, and then He will get us back on track. One of his favorite verses is 1 John 1:9.”

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

“Start over. Reset,” Levi said. “I get it.”

The server came with the bill, and Levi paid it as he had insisted.

As they walked out of the restaurant toward Levi’s truck, Maggie got curious. She had been dealing with Levi’s personal life for twenty-two months.

“Do I know her?” She waited for Levi to unlock the passenger side.

He nodded. “You know her very well.”

“Oh. Then I can put in a good word for you.”

“I’m sure you can.”

They were buckling in when Levi answered her carefully. Too carefully, in fact, and made Maggie suspicious.

“Okay. I’ll help.” Not too happy to help, but she’d do it for Levi’s sake. “I’m your best friend, after all.”

“Are you?” Levi put the truck in reverse and backed out of the parking lot.

They were on the road before he spoke again. “How can you be my best friend when you’re in Florida and I’m in Georgia?”

“Technology, Levi. Video calls. Text messages.”

“Not in person.”

“You could drive seven hours one way to Lakeside.” Maggie didn’t expect him to.

“I could.” Levi checked the map on phone. “It’s not a bad drive. Straight through on I-75. I will if you want me to.”

“I was kidding.”

“I wasn’t.”

“Aren’t you busy with work and life?” Maggie asked.
