“Don’t worry about that.”
“Well, in that case, I could use your company,” Maggie said. “Dad would be happy to hear about your offer. He had asked me if anyone else would come with me on the road trip.”
“You know me, Mags. I will always be here for you.”
“Will you?”
Levi nodded. “How long have we known each other?”
“Three years.” Maggie wondered what he was getting at. “In the eternal scheme of things, three years are nothing.”
“For us mere mortals, three years means thirty-six months,” Levi said. “And out of that span of time, how long have we been best friends?”
“One year, maybe?”
“I think it’s one year and a half.”
“Thereabouts.” Maggie didn’t want to argue with him that he had missed four months because he might accidentally bring up his ex-girlfriend. Maggie didn’t have to argue with him about it. Levi had been single for one year and ten months. In that span of time, he and Maggie became best friends.
Levi’s pop quiz wasn’t over yet. “How long have we been dating?”
“Eight days. Why are you asking me all these questions, Levi?”
“What? Only eight days? It feels longer.”
“You first held my hand fifteen days ago,” Maggie reminded him.
“I was going to tell you that taking the next step forward is only natural, right?” Levi placed both hands on her shoulders.
“What next step, Levi?”
He looked shy all of a sudden. This was a first. Levi Theroux had never been shy.
“I’ve prayed about this all night.”
Maggie lifted up her eyes to check his face. “You don’t look tired.”
“I fell asleep sometime in the middle of the night, but I assure you, when I got up this morning, I continued praying.”
“About what exactly?”
“You and me and our future together.”
Maggie liked his thoughtful tone. “Strategic planning.”
“How long do you think we’ll be together?” Levi asked.
“As long as God wants us to be?” Maggie chose a safe answer.
“What if He wants us to be together for a lifetime?”
“Then so be it.”
“I like that answer.” His eyelids dropped and so did his chin. Gently, he brushed his lips against Maggie’s jawline. He raised his chin and his lips gently teased hers.
Maggie giggled.
Levi quietened her with a soft caress as their lips found each other.
