Around them, the morning sun shone, warming their hearts in the midwinter.

As slowly as he had begun, Levi lifted his lips away from hers. “Maggie.”

“Yes?”

“Will you marry me?” His voice was quiet and pleasant. Undemanding. It sounded like one of their many conversations over casual things?—

Wait a second.

“What?” Maggie pulled back in disbelief.

“You heard me.”

“So soon?”

Levi held her hands. “Is it? We’ve just gone through our timeline. We’ve known each other for three years. A bunch of people have married after they’ve only known each other for three weeks or three months. Compared to their timeframes, three years sound like a very long time.”

Maggie was stunned.

Levi was about to kneel down. Maggie stopped him. Levi looked disappointed.

“I’m not looking for a short-term relationship. As soon as we dated, I knew right away that you’re the only one for me for the rest of my life. I’ve prayed about it and have peace about this. I’m confident that God has brought you to me. I’m sorry it took me more than a year to realize it.” Levi’s left hand was still in his jean pocket.

Maggie didn’t want to think about what little shiny thing could be in that pocket.

“I know, but we’ve only dated for nine days,” Maggie reminded him. “How about you ask me again in six months?”

“Six months?” Levi’s left hand came out of his pocket empty-handed.

Maggie nodded.

“Then you’ll give me an answer?”

“I will.”

“You promise?” Levi’s earnest face melted Maggie’s heart.

She loved this man so much. “Okay. I promise.”

“You need to make good on your promise.” Levi went to his winter jacket that he had placed on a kitchen chair, and pulled out a blue gift box from one of its pockets.

He lifted up Maggie’s hand and placed the box in her palm.

Maggie’s heart thumped in her chest. She had seen this gift box before, but only one time when Tally’s husband had given her a birthday present.

“Open it.” Levi waited.

Maggie sat down on the lone armchair in the living room. She removed the white satin ribbon oh so carefully, and opened the box oh so slowly.

Inside were a pair of rings. Both identical except that one was bigger than the other.

They looked like platinum or white gold. The design included what looked like a cross, but it turned out to be a ’T’ with a row of diamonds on one side.

“You promised to give me an answer in six months, so here are our promise rings.” Levi knelt on the floor, and took the smaller ring out of the box.

“You came prepared with your Plan B.” Maggie resisted asking how much those rings cost. “Is this yet another Christmas present from you?”

“You know me. Never let an opportunity slip by. I don’t want to lose you, Maggie.”
