“Ashley?” He hurried down the steps.

“Romeo?”

He saw her pressed against one of the cells, her hands gripping the thick bars and her knuckles white. Her eyes were red and ringed with dark circles, and her face was blotchy from crying.

“Oh shit, sweetheart. What are you doing in here?”

He looked at the lock and realized he didn’t have the big copper key used to unlock the cell doors, and he wasn’t sure where it was.

“I...I don’t know,” she said, sniffling. “I drove into town to come talk to you and two cars pulled me over. I asked them to get you, but they wouldn’t, and they locked me down here.” Her voice cracked and tears spilled over her cheeks.

He reached through the bars and cupped the back of her head, leaning in and kissing her forehead. “I’m so sorry, Ashley. I didn’t know.”

“Can you let me out?”

“I don’t have the key, but I’ll get it.” He grabbed his phone but saw he didn’t have any service. “Crap, I’ll be right back.”

She clutched at him. “No! Don’t leave me, please.”

He gripped her wrist gently. “I don’t have cell service, and I have to figure out who locked you down here so I can get the key. I promise I won’t go far, and I’ll be right back.”

She nodded and released her hold on his shirt.

Giving her a quick kiss through the bars, he stalked to the entrance and stomped up the stairs, furious. Who the hell would lock up a human in the cells?

“What are you doing here?”

Romeo froze at the top of the stairs and saw Gavin and Nero coming around the house. Gavin had called to him.

“Did you lock that female in the cell?” Romeo demanded.

“Yeah,” Gavin said. He came to stand in front of Romeo and crossed his arms over his chest.

Gavin was mid-ranked in the ambush, but even if he’d been high ranked, Romeo outranked everyone but Midas, and Gavin wasn’t nearly big enough to be a threat to him.

“Why?”

“Because her vehicle was spotted driving around town several different times, including parked once here at Midas’s,andshe’s the female you tackled Lance for and let escape. We brought her to the cells for holding until we figured out whether she’s a threat or not.”

Romeo was incensed that they thought his mate was a threat, but he could admit thathe’dhad a similar thought since meeting her. She was hiding something, but that didn’t make her dangerous necessarily.

“She said she asked for me. Why didn’t you call me? Even if she hadn’t asked for me, I’m number two and should have been notified immediately.”

“We just stopped at your house, and you weren’t there,” Theo said.

Romeo grunted. “Let her go immediately.”

“Whoa, hold on,” Gavin said. “Who the hell is she and why is she here? Who is she to you?”

Romeo let out a low, deep growl. Nero, another mid-ranked male, stepped back and lowered his head, but Gavin stood his ground and met his glare.

“She’s my truemate. Let. Her. Go.”

Gavin’s brows rose comically high, but there wasn’t anything funny about this situation.

Gavin reached into his pocket and pulled out a wide key ring with a copper key. Romeo snatched it from him and spun, heading back down the way he came.

“I told you I’d be right back,” Romeo said. He unlocked the door and swung it open. Ashley ran into his arms with a soft sob, clinging tightly to him.
