‘Guys. Help. How do I keep the Tesla, but tell Lou I don’t want to get re-engage—’

‘You just can’t help yourself, can you?’ Tim shouts at me, cutting Jack off.

‘Look—’

‘We’re doing this first? Fine. You did say “she’s like a puppy”,’ Jack adds.

‘Things have changed.’

‘No, they haven’t!’ Tim erupts.

‘Nope,’ Jack agrees. ‘It’ll be the same story when—’ he tries to continue, but I just want him to stop.

‘It’s different this time, all right?’

‘That’s the best you’ve got?’ Tim seethes.

‘That’s all I’ve got.’

‘Then why is she referring to herself as your plaything?’ Jack says, stirring.

‘She doesn’t know things are different; and she’s only gone and started seeing bloody Jasper again. It’s all a bit of a clusterfuck.’

‘There’s a bloody surprise. We told you to leave her alone, Caleb. You just couldn’t, could you?’ Tim challenges.

‘I wasn’t the married one, visiting her for cups of tea and bringing her flowers when she was on her own. Why would you even do that?’ I spit back.

‘Wait. What?’ Jack stares at Tim.

‘Don’t make it sound like I was doing something wrong!’ Tim points his finger in my face.

‘You told Em, did you?’ I fire back.

‘Fuck you, Caleb!’

Tim is raging. I know I’m out of line and there is a chance I might end up over the balcony, but I am raging too. Tim and I square up to each other. I am almost hoping he throws the first punch.

‘What the fuck is happening?!’ Jack tries to step between us. ‘Tim, it’s Caleb. We knew this was going to happen. He always does this—’

‘No. I don’t always do this. I think I’m in love with her!’

‘Shit,’ Tim says, immediately backing down.

‘He’s not…’ Jack tries to laugh it off.

Tim ignores him and reaches out his hand. ‘I didn’t know it was like that, mate.’

I take it and he pulls me in for a hug and a pat on the back.

‘It is. Painfully. Fucking. So,’ I respond.

‘You going to tell her then? Because “I’m learning a lot” sounds more like a job placement than an epic romance,’ Jack says.

‘It doesn’t help that Jasper’s bloody hovering. I need to find a way to—’ I start.

‘Just tell her, mate. Let the chips fall,’ Tim advises.

‘What if she says it’s all just physical for her?’
