‘I don’t even know your name.’

She walked towards me with an outstretched hand. ‘DoctorMelissa Chang. Nice to meet you, Caleb Black, travelling salesman. I want to see you again. Give me your key. Get another one at reception. I’ll be back here by six.’

‘I have a client dinner…’

‘Cancel it. I’ll make it worth your while. My driver is waiting.’

She didn’t say goodbye or wait for a kiss; she just left.

When I arrived back at the hotel, late, and dejected from my last meeting, Melissa was already in the room, sipping on some champagne. I dropped my bag, gave her a quick kiss, grabbed her feet and started rubbing them distractedly.

‘How was your day?’ I enquired.

She narrowed her eyes at me. ‘Do you have a girlfriend? You mustn’t lie to me and I won’t lie to you.’

‘Okay.’ Her intensity made me chuckle.

‘So, do you have a girlfriend?’

‘Trust me, I’m not boyfriend material. Besides, why do you care? You’re engaged.’

‘I want us to be honest. No bullshit.’

‘Melissa, I can assure you that before I leave, probably for good, tomorrow, you’ll get zero bullshit from me.’

‘What if I want to see you again?’

‘After this trip, I can’t imagine I’ll be coming back. I haven’t managed to land a single client.’

‘You won’t visit?’

‘No bullshit? No. Upside is, we won’t get bored of each other, so we should make this memorable.’ I leaned in to kiss her and she climbed on my lap to straddle me.

‘I like you,’ she whispered. It was the first time she’d seemed to soften.

‘I like you too,’ I whispered back as I pulled her shirt over her head.

We fell back onto the bed and made every second of our last night together count.

I woke up the next morning to the sound of my phone ringing, with Melissa gone. It was a Singaporean number I didn’t recognise.

‘Hello?’ I greeted groggily.

‘MrBlack?’

‘Yes.’

‘This is Leonard Yu, head of marketing, Pacific Mining and Metals. I understand you’re in the country, providing services that may be of use. I was wondering if you have some time at about eleven a.m. to come in and discuss this with us?’

I scrambled out of bed. ‘Yes, of course.’

‘Fantastic. My PA will email our details over to you. We look forward to meeting you.’

‘Yes, thank you.’

He hung up and I punched the air. I’d had Pacific on my hit-list my last three trips, but that place was a fortress. I looked over to Melissa’s side of the bed and saw a sheet of hotel notepaper.

Caleb,
