I would like to see if we get bored of each other. I’ve taken your business cards and found your company target list. Clear your day, get the latest flight you can tonight and expect a few phone calls.

I like you.

Mel

My phone didn’t stop ringing that day. I filled my diary with appointments, and for what was sure to be my next trip in three months. Every single meeting was successful. That is how Melissa built my career and Ivory Bow’s immense success in Asia. If only work knew.

After very little digging, I discovered that Mel was the only child of the owner of one of the largest construction companies in the city. As his bright and exceptionally capable daughter, she had the world and wealth at her disposal, which made pursuing her dream of being a surgeon easily achievable. She, like her father, had a reputation for being a hard nut to crack and a workaholic.

After her father died, she had to assume senior roles in his businesses, in addition to her hospital work. She was engaged to Kevin Wong, a software entrepreneur who she met at university. They’d been engaged for a while and the rumour was that a particularly hefty prenuptial agreement was responsible for delaying the wedding.

Mel confided that she didn’t want to get married and kept finding ways to put it off. It worked well in the eyes of society to have a man on her arm, and Kevin Wong wasn’t complaining about the benefits of being engaged to Melissa Chang. I wasn’t complaining about my benefits either. I was removed from Singaporean culture and fantastic in bed, so I was her escape. It was the perfect relationship.

When I left Singapore, we had no contact, but as soon as I landed back there, she moved into my hotel room and lived in bed with me for the duration. I had no idea where she lived and we never went out in public. It was the way it had to be.

As usual, I am picked up from the airport by her driver, Zheng, the only other person that knows I exist; and find a note waiting for me.

It’s time we got somewhere more permanent together. Cancel your hotel. M.

Our own place. That’s upping the stakes a bit. Normally I’d be worried; but it’s Mel. She’s exactly what I’d look for in a woman. Beautiful, powerful, slightly terrifying, knows exactly what she wants and, most importantly, reassuringly unavailable.

Zheng delivers me to a suite at Marina Bay Sands, where a butler relieves me of my bags and puts the contents away carefully. I shower and put on a bathrobe and am on my third glass of champagne when she returns from work, hair up, still in her scrubs. She beams at me as she accepts her champagne from the butler.

‘Leave us,’ she instructs and he promptly disappears.

‘Hello, you.’ I stay in my seat with my feet up on a stool, and watch her cross the vast living area.

‘What do you think? The Hyatt was getting too familiar.’

‘I could definitely get used to this.’

She puts her champagne down and sheds her scrubs to reveal an intricately lacy flesh-coloured thong and brassiere.

‘You’re so fucking sexy,’ I exhale, barely getting the words out.

She grins seductively and slides her hand up my bathrobe. I know what she wants, and I will gladly give it to her.

‘Good to know that I still have the same effect on you, Caleb.’

She pulls my bathrobe open, exposing me, and climbs over me and sits slowly and precisely on me, teasing me inside her until I fill her. She begins to move, keeping her body at a distance, but holds my gaze. Her movements become more urgent. She’s always like this when we first get together after some time apart. Like she needs to get it out of her system. By the end of my trip, she’ll be blissfully relaxed and peacefully exhausted, as always. I watch as Melissa’s wave tips her over the edge and she has her first release. I wait a couple of moments after she collapses on top of me to speak.

‘Delighted to be back here with you,’ I whisper into her hair.

She smiles that slow, feline smile of hers. She eventually climbs off me and hops into the shower. When she returns, she is wrapped in a white bathrobe and is waving the room service menu as she hops into bed.

‘I hope you’re hungry.’ She smiles invitingly.

‘Starving!’ I confirm, joining her in bed, ready to settle in for the night.

I wake up late the next morning to Melissa on the phone, instructing someone to consider using Ivory Bow. She finishes the call quickly as she sees me sit up.

‘Morning. You slept in late.’

‘I was with an incredible woman with an insatiable appetite.’

She hides her eyes as she giggles.

‘Was that a new client?’
