‘Potentially. DMVI. Great company. What does your schedule look like?’

‘I have an early-evening meeting tomorrow, then I’m out all of Tuesday, and I have a few new leads to chase down on Wednesday and Thursday.’

‘That’s a lot. Don’t you have enough to keep you busy?’ She sticks her bottom lip out.

‘I do.’ I pull her onto my lap in bed. ‘But I should try to win a few of my own.’

‘Are you feeling like a kept man?’ She smirks.

‘A little.’ I laugh.

‘You are. Get used to it. Cancel your appointments.’ She kisses me on my nose.

‘I’d quite like to go,’ I push back gently.

‘Caleb, don’t be exhausting. You’re only here for five days. Why chase these sales contracts, when I can just give them to you?’

‘Because I can’t be dependent on you for ever, Mel.’

‘Wait until your next trip. I promise I won’t stand in your way. I need you this trip…hmmm?’ She drapes herself over me. ‘We have so many new surfaces to christen, and we should talk about what’s going on here.’

She moves her index finger lazily between us. ‘I have a wedding date.’

She has got to be joking.

‘Melissa. We can’t do this if you’re married. EvenIhave to draw the line somewhere.’ I get up and put a towel around me. I can’t believe she is dropping this on me now.

‘Relax, Caleb. I’m beginning to think you care.’ She chuckles.

‘Of course I care,’ I spit back.

‘We discussed this. No feelings. I know you’re not in London alone, crying yourself to sleep over me. I’m very fond of you, but we knew this’d end eventually. When it does, we can’t get emotional.’

‘Why did you move us here then? It seems pretty significant for something that’s going to end.’

‘It is significant. I bought it for us. It could be our little hidey-hole when I get married. However, if you insist that this must end, it will become yours.’

‘You’re trying to turn me into your mistress?’ I eye her suspiciously.

She bursts out laughing. ‘Would you like to be?’ She winks at me. ‘Relax, Caleb. The set date isn’t until next year and it will probably be moved anyway. Tricky things, prenups.’

‘You don’t have feelings for this guy. Don’t marry him. Don’t marry anyone. Maybe I could spend more time out here.’

‘And what would that look like?’ She lies on the bed. ‘Indulge me.’

‘Well, I’m killing it at work, thanks to you.’

She raises her eyebrows joyfully. ‘You’re welcome.’

‘We could start up an Ivory Bow Asia…’

‘And live happily ever after?’

‘I wouldn’t go that far…but we could build something together. It could be fun working with you.’

‘Us working together? No. You’d have to be my house husband.’ She pulls me down over her and kisses me. ‘And no offence, but your industry sounds like a nightmare and it doesn’t interest me in the slightest.’

‘I could be a house husband…’ I play along, knowing it would be my worst nightmare.
