“Do most argue like that?” Carmen asked.

“Not really. I’ve found homeowners tend to be fussier, but some of the businesses are too. I give them leeway to start and then I put my foot down when I start to order.”

“I noticed that,” Carmen said. “You were all nice and friendly and then joking about how much work it takes for you to make changes.”

She grinned. “I normally play that card later on, but we needed to end that meeting because you know as well as I do that they are going to keep changing their minds.”

“Yeah. I guess so,” Carmen said.

When there was a knock on her doorframe she looked up to see Gabe standing there.

“Hey,” she said. “What brings you by?”

They hadn’t seen each other much lately. They’d been taking turns staying at the other’s house on the weekends. During the week they had one to two nights.

No reason to rush things. Their conversation a few weeks ago was a bit deeper than she’d planned on it being in her mind.

She was glad when he ended it though. She didn’t want to be the one to do it.

“It’s pouring out,” he said. “Work is halted. I’m hungry if you are?”

Elise hadn’t even realized it was raining. She’d been so busy dealing with annoying clients.

She turned her head. “Damn. I had no idea.”

“Are you going to introduce me?” Carmen asked. Her eyes were looking Gabe over.

“Sorry. Carmen Blowers, this is Gabe McCarthy. You’ll hear his name a lot, I’m sure.”

“I have already,” Carmen said, standing up to shake hands.

“Can you give me five minutes to finish up and then we can get something to eat.”

“No food truck,” he said. “I don’t want to sit outside.”

“I wasn’t going to suggest that anyway,” she said.

“I’ll go talk to your father quickly. I need to run something by him anyway. Unless Royce is here?”

“Both are in my father’s office,” she said. “You’re lucky you caught Royce.”

She watched Gabe leave.

“He’s yummy,” Carmen said.

She looked at Carmen. “He is.”

“Is he taken? He’s totally my type.”

Elise frowned. “He’s taken,” she said. “By me.”

“Oh my God,” Carmen said. Her face flushed. “I had no idea. No one said a word. I’ve heard his name because he owns the building with you and the others. I thought he was asking you to a business meeting.”

She laughed. It was forced, she knew. “I should have said something. I didn’t think anything of it. I’m surprised no one else said a word to you about it.”

“No,” Carmen said. “Seriously, they didn’t. I don’t want you to think I’m poaching or anything. I’m not. But he still is sweet on the eyes. Speaking of eyes. His are piercing.”

“They are,” she said, grinning now. “Think nothing of it. I should have said something before, I guess. I’m not in the habit of doing that.”
