Even when she tried to be the bigger person it didn’t matter. “You can believe what you want,” she said. “I wish I had a different relationship with you, but it won’t happen. We are two different people. You’re not going to change.”

“Neither will you,” her mother snapped.

“Considering I’m not being sarcastic or yelling at you, I’d say I already have. Have a great day, Mom.”

She hung up after that and took a deep breath. She was damn proud of herself for her calm nature and maturity over that call.

She sent a text to Royce to say she was good and she’d talk to him later, to enjoy his night with his girls.

Royce often called Chloe and Willow that and she found it sweet.

Her next text was sent to Gabe. They had no plans to see each other tonight, but she needed to. She had to tell him how she felt.

In her mind, it was about damn time. If he didn’t feel the same, she’d just have to deal with it.

Maybe she’d work on him more the same way he worked on her to get them to this place.

In her mind, it was his fault she fell in love with him so he better damn well catch up if he wasn’t there yet.

SMOKE SIGNAL

Gabe stepped out of the shower. He’d left work earlier than he planned, but when Elise said she’d just got done talking to her mother and wanted to see him tonight, he stopped what he was doing and raced home to prepare.

He found he was rushing more than he should and then heard her downstairs. She had a garage door opener.

He got dressed quickly and all but jogged down the steps to see her in the kitchen whistling.

“Hey,” he said.

“What’s the rush?” she asked him. She had food she was taking out of a bag. Tacos.

“You brought dinner?” he asked

“Yep. Stopped at the taco truck. You know, like our first date.”

“You’re in a good mood,” he said. “I wasn’t sure with the smoke signal you sent up.”

She laughed. An honest to goodness true one and not forced. “Not quite that,” she said.

“What happened?” he asked.

He listened while she relayed the conversation back to him.

“You have to let me see this picture,” he said.

He wasn’t sure why he was just hearing about it now.

She pulled her phone out and started to scroll through. “Here,” she said. “What do you see?”

He looked at the picture. He blew it up more and saw her eyes on him. “I see someone that likes what she is looking at,” he said. That was as best as he could get right now without pushing it with what he saw.

He saw love in her eyes.

“That is true,” she said. “I’m looking at your eyes too. What is it that you see?”

He scrolled it over and saw his gaze on hers. “I think we are feeling the same,” he said. “And I can see where it was obvious for anyone looking to notice that.”
