“That’s the thing,” she said. “No one saw that picture but my family. It was a frame taken in time.”

“Looks like perfect timing to me.”

“So that brings me to this visit.”

“This has nothing to do about your mother?” he asked.

She waited a second. “Maybe this wasn’t a good thing. You told me before to sit back on things and not make decisions after I talk to my mother.”

Now he wanted to kick himself for saying those words to her before.

“I think that is different. That was when you were worked up. You’re not worked up now, are you?”

“I’m not,” she said. “At all. Not in a bad way.”

“What kind of way?” he asked.

“You told me before you wanted someone that was a straight shooter. That’s me. I’m just going to say it. I love you.”

“It took you long enough,” he said.

“Really?” she said, slapping his arm. “That is what you’re going to say back to me?”

He hugged her tight. “Really, Elise. You saw that picture. You know what I’m feeling.”

“Maybe I need you to say it.”

“I love you. I think I’ve loved you for years.”

“Come on now,” she said. “No way. We couldn’t even be in the same room with each other.”

“And I hated myself for that. I tried everything I could to loosen you up and it never worked.”

“Then all of a sudden here we are. I even told my father I wondered if he and your father had something to do with it.”

“What?” he asked. Oh shit. “When did you say that?”

“It was a few weeks ago. When you came to have lunch with me and Carmen said you were hot. She commented on the merging of dynasties. Remember?”

“Yes,” he said. “But you never told me about talking to your father.”

He would have remembered and tried to put a stop to her thinking it.

“There was no reason to,” she said. “My father said that your dad and he joked about it but then would laugh. He knew how I felt about you.”

He grinned. “But you don’t feel that way now.”

“Nope,” she said. “I do wonder if I’d still want to be hiding our relationship if Diane and Carolyn didn’t say they had someone for you.”

“You were jealous,” he said, giving her a squeeze. “Just like you were when Carmen said I was hot. Admit it.”

“Maybe,” she said. “I do think that you’re too good for me. In looks and temperament.”

“Don’t do that,” he said. “I love you. Not the person that was in that dress that day either. That was just one side of you that was sexy, but it’s what was on the outside. The inside is whatI want. What I need. You understand me more than any other woman has.”

“We know you had a lot of women too,” she said, her fingers squeezing his side.

“Neither one of us was a virgin,” he said. “Well, not months ago.”
