“I’m always happy,” he said, putting a smile on his face. His head dipped down and he gave her a quick kiss. “Maybe just not watching another man’s hands on you.”

She laughed quietly. “It’s Zander. I’ve known him since he was thirteen and had zits. Bet you never did with that smooth skin of yours.”

“Very cute,” he said. “Don’t be jealous I’ve got good genes.”

She giggled and he was shocked to hear that sound. “We can’t all be blessed with a face from the gods.”

“Not gods,” he said. “My mother always said I had the face of an angel.”

He was thrilled Elise was in such a good mood. Elise’s mother had been pointed out to him. He’d heard the whispersand felt the resentment and anger for a woman he’d never met but who’d hurt his girlfriend time and again.

He’d even seen the two of them talking and Elise walking away while taking a few deep breaths and going back to her father with a smile on her face.

It was forced, but it didn’t seem to be affecting her mood.

Maybe hewasstaring too much to know that.

“I happen to like your genes,” she said. “And I should be getting back now. Wait here for me to go in first.”

“Sure,” he said. Even if he hated that he agreed to it.

She looked around the corner and then took off in a fast walk, the sound of her shoes clicking all the way.

He looked out and started to walk, but then saw Grant Fierce open the bathroom door, look at Elise’s back and then him behind.

“Gabe, that’s just pathetic.”

There was no reason to ask what Grant was talking about. Or why he was clicking his tongue and shaking his head.

“Tell me about it,” he said. “Don’t suppose you’ve got any advice for me?”

He had to be desperate for those words to escape.

“We like to help,” Grant said. “But word on the street is you are doing this yourself.”

He laughed over that choice of words. “Doesn’t seem to be doing me much good.”

“We can go drop some hints,” Grant said. “My wife would love it.”

“No,” he said. “That would be a mistake I’m sure. I just need to figure out how to get her to come out with it in the open. Forget I said anything.”

“Let us know if you make any progress.”

He nodded and went into the bathroom. He might as well go while he was here.

When he returned to the table, his mother asked, “Everything okay?”

“Just talking to Grant in the hallway.”

“Oh,” his mother said. “Anything to share?”

“No,” he said.

“Kids these days,”Garrett said to Richard, Jim and his brother two hours later.

The wedding was starting to wind down and some people had left already. There were about thirty minutes left before the bride and groom would leave and the rest of those remaining would depart too.

The four of the men were off to the side chatting and having a beer. It was time they compared notes without too many people wondering what was going on.
