“He’s probably with his smokin’ friends,” I tell her.

“Cam doesn’t smoke,” she snaps at me. She doesn’t know half of what that kid does.

“Yeah, he does. Caught him doin’ it. I’m sure he’ll be home soon,” I tell her before turning and heading for my door.

“Would you help me look for him?” I stop and turn back to her, debating if I should or not. I should walk away from her. I don’t need this shit in my life. She doesn’t need my shit in her life, but I can’t say no.

“Yeah, I will.” She gives me a small smile, and we walk around the back of the house looking, but we don’t see him anywhere.

“Do you know his friends?” I ask as we walk.

“No. I’m such a bad mother. Anything could have happened to him. And where was I?” she exclaims angrily.

“You were workin’. Makin’ a livin’ to take care of your kids, Lyra. Don’t do that to yourself. I’m sure he’s just out with his friend,” I reassure her. She nods her head as I walk her back to the front door and hold it open for her.

“Will you stay?” I shouldn’t. I should say no, but again, I don’t. Instead, I nod my head and follow her inside. We walk over and sit on the couch, neither of us saying a word. When I see how tense she is, I reach over, wrapping my arm around her shoulders and rubbing it gently.

“This isn’t like him,” she says softly.

“How old is he?”

“Fourteen.”

“Shit, Mama. I was way worse than that when I was his age. He’ll be home,” I tell her. She nods her head but doesn’t say anything else. We sit in silence for a long time, neither of us speaking when I hear something. I shove off the couch and motion for her to be quiet as I sneak over to the door. I pull my gun just in case as I watch the door slowly creep open. When it’s opened enough that I can reach the person, I grab them around the neck and slam them against the wall, pressing the gun to their head.

“What the hell?” I hear the voice scream. Lyra flips on another light, illuminating the room until I see it’s him.

“You little shit. Do you know how scared your mom was?” I hiss at him before pulling the gun away and shoving it into the back of my jeans.

“What are you doing here?” he asks, looking between the two of us.

“Lookin’ for your ass. Go fuckin’ hug your mom!” I growl at him. He walks past me and straight toward Lyra before pullingher into a hug. I watch her eyes fill with tears as she holds her son. That’s what people call unconditional love. I can see it in her eyes. She loves her kids.

I start for the door when she pulls away from him.

“Wait,” she says. “Cam, go to your room.” He nods his head and walks away, but she doesn’t move, at least not until he’s out of the room. Then she’s rushing me, slamming into me with her whole body, her lips crashing against mine. She’s kissing me like she needs me, and maybe she does. I know tonight has been hard on her and confusing, to say the least. A lot has happened, and she doesn’t know how to take it all. I don’t say that I blame her, either.

Instead of thinking about all that, I kiss the woman back. I know this is going to go too far. I know things are going to get out of hand, so I pull away gently from her.

“Gotta stop you there, Mama.”

“What?” she asks, nearly panting for breath.

“We need to stop,” I tell her. She seems to think about this for a second before nodding her head and taking a step back.

“Thanks for waiting with me,” she murmurs.

“I’ll see you tomorrow. Lights on.” She looks at me like I’m crazy, but I just give her a wink and head for the door.

“You still want to meet?” she asks as I reach for the handle.

“Yeah. Same time, same place.”

“Why?”

“I like makin’ you come.” With that, I pull the door open and walk out. I head down the steps and cross the yard into mine before climbing my steps and walking inside.

This night has been crazy. The club is running smoothly, and for that, I’m grateful. What I need to know is why she was there. So I pull out my phone and call Kimber.
