“I’m gonna need a little information from you. Like his name and shit like that,” I tell him.

“I can do that.” He goes on to tell me his name and the last place they lived where he found them. The poor kid has been moved around so goddamn much that he doesn’t even remember where home used to be. It pisses me off they’ve had to live like that.

“Thanks, Cam.”

“You really like my mom?” he asks.

“Yeah. I do. I think she’s a great person.”

“Me too.”

“So maybe try not to give her too much shit then, yeah?” He smiles and nods his head.

“I’ll try.” With that, I nod, and we walk back inside to see Lyra cleaning up. Cam walks over, takes the plates from her hands, and moves to the sink to start washing up the dishes. Lyra looks over her shoulder at me, a confused look on her face.

“What’s happening?”

“Nothin’. Cam has it handled. Come outside with me,” I tell her. She nods her head, but not before looking at Cameron one last time. He stands there washing the dishes as she walks toward me.

We walk outside, and I instantly grab her in my arms, kissing her deeply.

“What’s that for?”

“Thanks for dinner,” I tell her.

“You leaving?”

“Tryin’ to get rid of me?” I ask playfully.

“No. I was just wondering.”

“What if I wanna stay here tonight.” Her lips part, but nothing comes out of them. She isn’t sure about this yet, and I get that, but I want to be here. I want more of her. I want her to open up to me and talk. I’ll do whatever I have to do to make that happen.

“Okay.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah, I’m sure. We usually watch a movie before the boys go to bed,” she tells me.

“I’m up for a movie.”

“Okay.”

“Don’t sound so hesitant, Lyra. We’re gonna spend time together, all of us.”

Lyra

We watched a movie, and then I sent the kids to bed. It was nice having Knight here. He laughed at the movie along with the kids, and it made my heart swell with happiness. But that happiness can’t last long. It never does, which makes me wonder why the hell I agreed to try this thing with Knight. I knew I wouldn’t be around long. I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay in one place. A part of me regrets getting this close to him. I should have stayed away. I shouldn’t have said I’d try.

I pull my shirt over my head and toss it into the hamper before removing my bra and pulling on my pajama shirt. I finish changing and washing up before I step back into the bedroom, seeing Knight sitting shirtless on the edge of the bed. He lifts his head and looks up at me, his eyes roaming my body.

“Damn, Mama.”

“I don’t know if this is a good idea,” I tell him as I fiddle with my hands in front of me.

“What’s that?”
