“Prospect. He’s gonna be hangin’ around you guys a little more now. I want someone to keep an eye out just in case I’m not around, yeah?” I don’t like the idea of him not being around, but I understand he has a life, too. He has things he has to do.

“Is he okay with it?”

“Of course he is. He does what he’s told to do,” Knight replies, lifting his hand to one finger to salute the guy. He waves back before Knight flings his arm around my shoulder and pulls me into his side.

“You need to relax. I think I can help you do that,” he says softly.

“Oh yeah? How can you do that?”

“I can start by takin’ you to the hotel you love so much. Strippin’ you naked and havin’ you laid out on the bed for me. I would kneel between those sexy thighs of yours and lean in, lickin’ your clit while I finger fuck you.” His words cause heat to swirl inside me, and I find myself clenching my legs together tighter. Knight notices and barks out a laugh before pressing a kiss to the side of my head. “Got you wet and ready, huh?”

“You think I’m wet from just words?” I tease him. He’s right I am, but I want him to keep going. I need him to keep going.

“I think your pussy is drippin’ for me. I think you’re so fuckin’ hot right now that you can barely stand it. You want my fingers inside of you. You want my cock inside of you, but you love the hotel. You love me eatin’ you for hours on end. Just admit it, Mama. Tell me you love it,” he demands, and my stomach tumbles. He’s right. I do love it.

“I do love it.”

“Then that’s what we’re doin’.”

“When?”

“Eager for me?” he smiles just as Billy comes running over for water. I have to adjust myself and swallow hard to get past his dirty words and give my son some water.

“Did you see me, Knight? Wasn’t I good?” he asks excitedly.

“You were kickin’ ass, kid. I’m proud of you.” Tears burn the back of my eyes as Billy blinks up at him. I can tell he’s confused by what Knight said. I try to blink the tears away, but there’s no use in it. They fall down my cheeks as Billy smiles brightly at Knight before taking off back to the field. Finally, Knight turns to face me and sees me crying.

“What happened?”

“His dad never told him he was proud of him,” I confess.

“His dad is a piece of shit, Lyra. I’m not him. If I say I’m proud of him, it’s because I am.” I nod my head, and we both turn back to watch the rest of the practice.

When it’s over, Knight walks out onto the field and talks with the coach who he’s friends with. They both laugh and carry on as Billy rushes back over to me.

“Is Knight going to be my new dad?”

“Why do you ask that?”

“The other kids wanted to know. They said it’s so cool he rides a motorcycle,” he tells me.

“It is pretty cool, but no, he isn’t your dad.”

“I wouldn’t mind it. I mean, I know we have a dad, but he doesn’t like us very much, right, Mom?” My heart breaks a little more in my chest as I look down at him and run my hand over the top of his head.

“I think you owe Knight a thank you for helping get you on the team,” I tell him, changing the subject to something I can handle.

“Okay. Be right back,” he says before taking off once more. I smile as I watch him go, and I smile even bigger when I see Knight kneel to his level and pull him into a hug. My chest tightens as I think about having to leave him. So far, nothing else has happened, but that doesn’t mean anything. Dave could pop up at any given moment, and we’d have to be ready to run.

I don’t like running or hiding out. I want my kids to have a normal life. I want them to enjoy being kids and making friends.

“You okay?” I glance over at Cameron as he comes to sit next to me.

“We’re not leaving, Cam.”

“What do you mean? Did he find us?” I shake my head.

“No. Not yet, but if he does, we’re not leaving. We’re going to fight back. I’m going to fight back.” I see the smile as it pulls across my son’s face, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s been a longtime since I’ve seen that smile. It’s been even longer since I’ve been the one to put it there.
