Page 7 of Knight

“What the fuck is it with you people and makin’ so much noise?” Knight asks as he looks around at everyone. Tonight, he’s wearing a shirt with a leather vest over it and jeans that hang just the right way off his hips. Fuck, I shouldn’t be looking, but the man from earlier has gotten me all frustrated.

“There was a fight,” I tell him, pointing out the obvious.

“No shit.”

“You don’t have to be such an ass,” I snap at him.

“Lady, I’m runnin’ on very little sleep, thanks to you and your kids. Don’t fuck with me right now,” he tells me. I want to push his buttons, but at the same time, I get a sense of danger around him. Maybe it’s not smart to back-talk him.

“Thanks for the help,” I tell him, grabbing Cam by the shoulder and jerking him in the direction of the house. I hear the other kid saying something, but I can’t make out what. Then Knight is yelling at him to get the hell out of here.

“You didn’t have to do that,” Cam snaps at me, pulling away now.

“Are you kidding me? You’re out here fighting, Cameron,” I yell back at him.

“He was talking shit.”

“I don’t care, and watch your mouth!”

“I don’t need this crap, Mom. You don’t need to bail me out all the time,” he tells me before walking around the house. I sigh and run my hand over my face as Jessica watches the scene unfold.

“Hot neighbor,” she finally chimes in and makes me smile.

“He doesn’t seem to like kids much,” I tell her.

“I know this is hard on you. I’m sorry, Lyra.” I nod, and she pulls me into a hug when I notice Knight talking to Cam. I can’t hear what’s being said, but Knight’s hands are flying all over. He’s probably telling him about being loud at night, and honestly, I don’t have the energy to argue with him tonight, so I don’t.

I let Jess walk me back inside with Billy right behind us.

“It wasn’t Cam’s fault, you know? That kid was making fun of us for not having a dad.” Now my heart drops. Kids are so cruel these days.

“And you know why your dad isn’t around, Billy. What makes what Cam did better than what he used to do?” I ask him, needing to get my point across.

“It’s not, I guess.”

“You’re right, it’s not. Cam shouldn’t have done that, and neither should you.”

“I’m sorry,” he mumbles, looking down at his feet. I pull him into a quick hug before sending him back to bed.

“That’s rough,” Jessica says.

“You think? After what Dave put us all through, they think it’s okay. I don’t know how to fix that, Jess.”

“You’re doing great. Don’t ever doubt that,” she assures, making my heart fill with happiness. I’m glad someone can see I’m doing the best I can for the boys.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me. I see how you are with them. You’re a good mom, Lyra. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. Not even the hot guy next door.” We both share a laugh at that.

“He is pretty hot, isn’t he?”

“Girl, he is fire. I would hit that,” she laughs.

“I bet you would. You should talk to him,” I tell her.

“No way. I’m not that girl. I don’t approach men like that,” she says as I smirk.

“Yeah, you are. Look at the line of work we do,” I remind her.
