Finally, I heard footsteps coming from behind me and bit my lower lip.

“My beautiful doll,” Francois said in his deep baritone.

“My stunning racecar driver.”

He laughed and wrapped his arms around me, allowing us to sway back and forth in time to the music. “You’re right on time.”

“I had a feeling you’d spank me if I hadn’t been.”

His laugh was boisterous. “You know me far too well, my darling woman.”

“What is all this?”

“Patience, my dear girl.”

“Said by the man with none.”

“Champagne or wine?”

When he moved away from me, I turned around slowly. “Why, bubbly, of course. Whatever are we celebrating on this glorious night?”

“My latest acquisition.” He lifted a single eyebrow then grinned as he pulled the bottle from the bucket.

I studied him intently, plucking a strawberry from one of the trays, purring when I took a single bite of the sweetness.

He couldn’t seem to take his eyes off me, the mischievous grin on his face widening. He took his sweet time popping the top then pouring, finally grasping the two flutes and walking in my direction. “To my beloved.”

“You really love me?”

“With everything I have, my darling.”

“Just so you know, my father offered me a position in his firm.”

He lifted his eyebrows. “He did now?”

“You scoundrel! You knew about it.”

His laugh filtered around me. “There are to be no more secrets between us, especially if we’re going to become family for real.”

“Are you asking me to marry you?”

“Not yet. But I will when the time is right.”

The man knew how to tease me relentlessly. “You are one bad man.”

“Have I ever lied and told you otherwise?”

When he handed me the glass, the electric sensations coursing through me were magnified. I could swear they were. The man had such animal magnetism that I was in a dreamy state already.

He slipped his finger under my chin when I didn’t answer. “Have I?”

“Never,” I told him.

“And I never plan on it either.”

“So, what’s behind the canvas?”

He shifted his gaze, acting like he was thinking. “I don’t know if you deserve to see it just yet.”
