I stand and grab Laney’s bag after she throws her things in there. “Let’s go.”

“You’re not staying here with him?” Her eyes bug out in a panic.

“You can’t drive, Laney.”

I usher her out of the room, not wanting her to regret her decision. She needs to take a break. Before we make it to the elevator doors, she calls out to one of the nurses who hurries over.

“I’m going to go take a shower and eat a little something. No one goes in his room, okay? No one.” The glare she gives the woman would have most people cringing. When she doesn’t balk, I’m slightly nervous for Havoc to have to encounter her.

“You got it. I promise I’ll take good care of him.”

Laney nods, seeming to relax just slightly. “I already did physical therapy with him today, but he needs some more chapstick if you have it. His lips are so dry.”

“I’ll get right on it. That’s pretty common for coma patients. Since they can’t wet their lips themselves, it usually causes dry skin to build up. I’ll put some moisturizer on them and help clean his face up a bit.”

The hospital staff here really are amazing. They have to be in order to house the adopted nephew to the Bratva king. Boris has half of the building in his pocket.

“Thank you,” Laney says, and I nudge her forward just a bit to get her moving again.

“I’ll bring you back as soon as you’ve showered and eaten. Cross my heart.” She sighs and follows me as we narrowly miss Havoc stepping out of the elevator on the other end of the hall. I stand in Laney’s way so she can’t see him. They may be fighting and I may have her back, but Havoc doesn’t deserve to hurtalone either. He needs this time just as much as Laney needs a break.

As we approach the car, I can’t help but feel a little relieved knowing we have a plan. Maybe I’m not so bad at this taking charge thing after all.

Chapter 7

“You can’t go in there.” A stern female voice catches me off guard as I try to enter Arrow’s room.

“Who’s going to stop me?” I challenge her.

I may be a nice person to my family, but I need to see Arrow before I go on a killing spree. As much as I can acknowledge this nurse is helping Arrow stay comfortable, she’s also in my way. And that’s not a place anyone wants to be right now.

“I’ll call security. There will be a ruckus and that will only stress out the patient that’s in a coma. You wouldn’t want that, would you?”

She crosses her arms and stares me down. I knew nurses were supposed to be fairly badass, but I really need her to stop using her superpower and let me in to see the man I love.

Wait, no. I don’t love him. I just really like him. Fuck.

I grit my teeth and grab my phone, dialing Boris’ number. This is basically his hospital. He answers on the first ring.

“What is it?”

“I’m currently doing everything I can to not go on a killing spree in this damn hospital. So, if you could so kindly ask this nurse to let me see the man I… care about. That would be greatly appreciated.”

I don’t wait for his response, I just hand the phone to the nurse. She glares at me while Boris speaks, clearly giving me permission to do whatever the fuck I want. When she hangs up, her face scrunches and damn, I feel like we could use her on our team or something. She’s feisty.

Maybe Doc needs an assistant.

She rolls her lips together while her forehead creases, and I smile. “An attitude like that is only going to give you wrinkles, sweetheart.”

“An attitude like yours will only get you killed.”

“I’m counting on it.” I wink at her as I push Arrow’s door open.

I make my way to his side when suddenly, the space feels too small. The moment I see Arrow lying there in the bed as still as a statue, my lungs refuse to work.

Tears burn the back of my eyes as I take him in. His normally neatly trimmed facial hair has grown into more of a beard. His eyes look more sunken in, and his muscular arms seem to already be deflating. It’s hardly been two weeks but the effects are as clear as day.

I fall into the seat by his bed, trying to force myself to take a damn breath. It doesn’t work. The world starts to go hazyaround me. Until a sob finally breaks through. I choke on it, fully freaking out. It isn’t until I’m met with unfamiliar hazel eyes that I finally come back to reality.
