“Help me, please.”

I move violently, trying to get free of my bindings. It’s them. They’re here to save me. Adrik didn’t kill them.

As the figures get closer, the small flicker of hope that illuminated my entire being is snuffed out in one quick blow.Their forms are off, something isn’t right. Then my uncle's face comes into view and when we lock eyes, the flame is doused in water to never resurface as my world ends all over again.

“You really are an easy one to fool when it comes to them. They aredead,Little Warrior. When are you going to learn?”

My hands shake, and I hate myself for showing weakness in front of him. He doesn't deserve my fear or my pain. He only deserves death.

“Why?” I manage to ask as I fight to get to him, to wrap my fingers around his throat and squeeze the life out of him. “I trusted you.”

Another laugh. “Naive one aren’t you? Trust is for children. You are not a child, but a warrior.Mywarrior.”

“I’m notyouranything.” I spit with venom lacing my tone.

“Why are you fighting this?” He sounds genuinely confused as he kneels down in front of me. As if the reason I want him dead is all made up in my head.

“Why would you fight the cause that created you? The very one that made you so strong?”

I scoff at him and with renewed strength I yell, “My strength doesn’t come from you!”

Looking down at my leg, the tattoo peeks out just slightly through the rips of my leggings. The red of the roses and green of the clovers have my heart aching all over again.

Theyare the ones who helped make me strong.Theysaw my willingness to fight, took up a weapon, and stood at my side.Theytaught me what it was like to love. To have a family again. He will not get a single acknowledgement for any of that.

Adrik shakes his head at me. That’s when Rostya’s face comes into view. “She might really be broken. I don’t know if we will be able to use her now.”

Use me? Boris is dead, the guys are all dead. What could he use me for now?

“She will come around, even if I have to make her into a zombie to get her there. She’s still strong, one of the best we have. I will break her and then we will finish the plan.”

They talk like I’m not even in the room. I roll my eyes over their antics, trying to make me feel small. Adrik would always do this when other women were in the room. It set my mind on edge but he seemed to listen to me so I believed there was hope for him. Damn, I had been really wrong there.

“If you would have given her to me when she was younger, I could have trained her. Taught her to listen and obey and to keep her fucking mouth shut.”

I hurl a wad of spit in his direction, remembering how enraged it got him before. The healing sucked the first few days, from my ribs knitting back together, but it’s bearable now and I want to poke this coward. I want to make him see I’m not a toy to be tamed. I'm nothis. He wanted me broken, but all he did was give me more of a reason to fight.

He bears his teeth and lunges toward me, but Adrik stops him. “She will learn, don’t worry.”

Rostya walks out of the room, stomping like a child while Adrik stares down at me with my limbs restrained to the floor. He kneels down so we are eye level. Assessing me, he cocks his head to the side.

“Do you think you’re alive because you learned to fight?”

He shakes his head, and a chuckle leaves him that has me grinding my teeth together.

“You’re only alive because of everything I did to save you. So get ready, Little Warrior. It’s time to show the world the weapon I created you to be.”

Chapter 2

Breathing. That’s what I need to focus on.

It’s been six days. Six days that the woman I plan to marry has been held captive by her tormentor in a place where I can’t find her. When we left the airport to chase after the car that took her, a massive explosion leveled everything. It’s a wonder we even made it out alive. I was able to track the car they had her in, all the way up until we found it abandoned on the side of the road, with no clue as to where it went from there.

It was clear the men who kidnapped her had some sort of signal jammer with them. Because since then, I haven’t been able to find her anywhere. Nothing is showing up. Havoc hasscouted every safe house and location he can think of. Boris has used every resource available to him.

I think Alexi is the most messed up though. Between him and Damien, the basement is now covered in so much blood I doubt anyone will ever be able to scrub it clean again. Damien had to start taking anxiety medication again because his body was so anxious he couldn’t sleep.

When he started hallucinating, we knew something needed to change. He welcomed it, though, knowing it was necessary and willing to do anything he needed to help Evie. It hasn’t fully kicked in for him yet but I can see small changes. Plus, he’s sleeping.
