“The three of you can hire whoever the fuck you think will get him better. I don’t care, just get into the cars when they get there. If there are people after Havoc, they likely won’t hesitate to grab you or Arrow to use as leverage.”

“Okie dokie.” She goes silent. Laney’s tell tale sign for being uncomfortable as fuck.

“I’ll text you,” I tell her, taking her off speaker. “It’s probably best if you come here anyway. Something’s about to happen.”

“So, that means the break is over.”

“Yup. Get out your weapons, Firecracker. It’s time to get ready for the next battle.”

???

Kia and Lyra arrive shortly after our call. It’s true what they say. When it rains, it pours. Another attack was initiated on Havoc as they were heading here.

Thankfully they were prepared and the first car took the brunt of the hit while the others got away. No one was killed, but one of the men went to the hospital with a severe concussion.

The second I see Laney’s bright blonde hair, I run to the car. Wrapping my hands around her before she has the chance to fully exit the vehicle, I nearly send us both toppling to the ground, but Havoc is there to save the day.

“I wouldn’t have let anything happen to her, E.”

He acts like that would make me less worried, but all it does is make me pull him in for a hug next. Havoc chuckles, returning the sentiment.

“I blame you for turning her into a hugger,” he says to Laney.

“I’ll take that compliment,” she says with a hair flip.

Backing up, I walk with them into the house. The living area feels a lot more full with everyone here, causing my anxiety to sky rocket. Without a word, Damien appears behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and kissing my head.

“Here,” he whispers. I take the stick of gum from his hand and look at it for a second.

“It’s sour gum. Should last longer than the lemonheads.”

I turn in his arms and kiss him. He’s been so attentive lately. Not that he wasn’t before, but it really is like he can see what I need before I do.

“Thank you, Sunshine.”

I pop the gum in my mouth as we take our seats, Boris leading the conversation.

“Alright, are you ready to tell us what is going on?”

Kia eyes Lyra for a second, then Nessa. With a firm nod from Nessa, she stands to speak.

“At this point, I assume you know that the leader of The Shades has been working on infiltrating all levels of the underworld.”

We all agree, so she continues. “We didn’t know just how far he had gotten until last week.”

She pulls up her phone, and a few moments later, we all receive an email.

“This is a list of everyone I’ve been in contact with. It’s around seventy percent of the students we all just studied with. Every single one of them is reporting a mole in their ranks or something suspicious happening. When Lyra and I first noticed people talking about this, we started taking notes. Once it seemed like it could no longer be a coincidence, we dug deeper.”

I scroll through the list of names and the incidents tied to them. They have names and photographs of the people who snuck into the organizations. What’s worse, I recognize most of them.

“They’re definitely Shades. I trained with half of these guys.”

Kia nods. “I knew we needed a plan, and Nessa told me what happened to you. Lyra and I are readers, so we went looking for a way to unite all of us against The Shades. Luckily, we found one.”

Everyone sits forward in their seats, tension building in the room as we all silently hope there’s an answer to our problems.

“We can invoke a round table.”
