“Like Knights? Are we going to be Knights?” Damien nearly jumps for joy over that idea.

Boris leans forward, rubbing a hand down his face as if he knows what this means. “You would need to form an agreement with all of the future and current leaders to do this. Only then can you invoke a round table.”

Kia smiles, and taps on her phone before all of our phones ping with another message.

“Luckily for you, I’ve already done that part.”

My eyes skim the document which outlines the terms of a ceasefire between all of us. The agreement states that we cannot use the situation as an opportunity to harm another organization within our group, but we will all target a single organization outside of it.

There are strict rules to outline which organizations are allowed to be targeted. Luckily for us, assassin leagues are on the list.

“What does this mean?” I ask.

“It means,” Kia answers, “if you want an army capable of taking down the most feared assassin league in the world, all you have to do is call the meeting and ask.”

“That’s a big favor to call in. Why would these people want to help me?”

Kia gives me a confused look. “You mean the people you gave up all of your free time to help train? The people that Alexi offered help to when they needed it? The ones Damien encouraged through their hard classes? The students Lev stayed up all hours of the night in the library teaching how to encrypt their hard drives so they could protect their families secrets? The ones Laney taught to use a bow and Nessa taught to shoot?”

Every person in the room seems to sit a little taller. Everyone except for Lev, who’s hand is gripping my thigh so tight I almost lose my focus as Kia continues.

“The onesyouworked in the gym with night after night and didn’t let a single one of them leave that training room without the basic knowledge of self-defense?”

She looks over to Lyra, and I know they are thinking about the night we stayed until three in the morning so that Lyra could perfect her self defense moves. It wasn’t lost on me that the skills she wanted to master were ones to help prevent men from taking advantage, and the look in her eyes even now tells me there’s more to it.

Kia had been worried about her and said she would not always be around which helped Lyra take it more seriously.

I didn’t realize how much we had been doing. Laney helped open our eyes to see that people were struggling. But after that, it just became second nature to help them. Once we all stopped feeling like everything was a competition, we all formed a bit of comradery.

“She is right, Evie.” Boris adds in. “I have the reports. This is the most successful class to ever go through the university. Every single student passed the trials. In fact, you should know that you passed too.”

My face wrinkles in confusion. “How did I pass?”

Boris crosses his leg and casually throws his arm around Nessa who looks shocked by the gesture. “A letter was written to The Society regarding the event. Your skills were all analyzed via the footage I sent them. Your many talents met their expectations.”

My jaw might actually fall onto the floor.

“Sometimes, you don’t have to win in order to pass.”

I try to wrap my head around this idea, but the pain from Lev’s hand is making it impossible to think straight. I know he’s likely just worked up over everything happening, but I don’t need a damn bruise on my leg. I shift next to him and take hishand in mine so that it’s no longer cutting off blood flow to the rest of my leg.

His hand only tightens around mine in a vice grip.Fuck, this guy could give a python a run for it’s money right now.

I push that thought aside as I get us back on track. If he needs to squeeze my hand right now, then I have to ignore the pain because this conversation is more important.

“So what are you saying, Kia? We initiate a round table and get everyone on our side to—what?”

She shrugs, sitting next to Lyra and wrapping an arm around her. “That’s for you to figure out, Evie. How do we take down the most notorious assassins of our time?”

I take a deep breath, knowing the answer but hating what it means. Taking Adrik down means putting every person I care about, every single one that I love, back into the line of fire.

“War.”

Lev squeezes my hand so hard I actually wince in pain. He doesn’t even notice, but Alexi and Damien both swat his arm at the same time. Lev blinks, seeming to come back into the room with us before he locks his jaw. Releasing my hand, he grabs my arm as he stands up, shoving me out of the room.

Damien’s mouth seems to open to say something, but I think everyone is too shocked about what’s happening. Or more so, who’s doing it.

“No.” That’s all he says.
