She scrambled off the bed and sprinted to the bathroom, finding a towel and wrapping it around her. She breathed deeply and tried to calm down. She kept her focus and slowly descended to her beta form. A quick check under the towel showed everything normal, average, and unremarkable. She checked the mirror, and there she was. Nearly twenty pounds lighter than she had been before this started but still within healthy ranges. Now she knew who the extra pounds were for.

She washed her hands, brushed her teeth, and ran her hands through her hair.

A soft knock at the door started her heart pounding again. “Myrtle?” Denith murmured.

“Uh, yeah?”

“Breakfast is getting cold.”

“I don’t really eat breakfast.”

“You are going to start.”

She opened the door, and he blinked and stepped back. “Oh.”

“I don’t like the other body. It’s unsettling.” She rolled to the outside edges of her feet and looked at him. “Is it a problem?”

He reached out and pulled her against him. Rubbing her back as she slowly reached out to hold him. “It isn’t a problem, sweet. I lost five pounds and now know that I was being supplemented. You weren’t. You were out there on your own, and you managed to stay alive. That’s very impressive, Myrtle.”

She nodded. “Pain is an excellent appetite suppressant. Do you know what time it is?”

He looked down. “No. Why?”

Byron offered, “Eight thirty.”

“I need to find a doctor. You guys got me stable, but if I am going to get out of it, I need every trick in the book. I am not going to drain Regis to gain twenty pounds back.”

Denith looked embarrassed. “I didn’t know she was doing it.”

“I know, but I looked horrible. Even if screwing you guys would get my weight back, I would demand you wear blindfolds. I don’t want you to remember that when you look at me.”

Denith stroked her back. “It is still you.”

“Yeah, but I am all bony and weird. It isn’t a me that I recognize.” She paused. “Wait. Can we get the Elite energy from any donor?”

Teyval said, “You may get ill if you are not compatible with them.”

“But... will I die?”

Teyval frowned. “Not according to our archive.”

“You are the archive.”

“Yes, now, what are you planning?”

“A little repair and renovation. Nothing you need to concern yourself with. I just need my phone.”

Teyval muttered, “That expression on your face. I am very concerned.”

“There isn’t any... well, there is a little risk. It depends on how many show up.”

Byron loomed behind Denith. “How many what?”

“Uh, the Elite are eager to watch my demise, so I thought that I would invite them to do it.” She smiled calmly and looked up a Denith. “You mentioned breakfast?”

He sighed. “Is this dangerous for you?”

“Well, I have to pretend to lose most of my energy and let my pulse go crazy, but when they call in the Elite, I am going to have a snack.”
