Lexi

Song: Purple Disco Machine, Sophie & the Giants – In The Dark

Crack, crack, crack.

“What the hell is going on here?” My best friend, Kate, pokes her head into my room when she hears music blasting on full volume and my glass statues, picture frames, and vases cracking against the hard, brick wall.

Her already big eyes go even wider at the sight of me jumping wildly on top of my bed, sheets rumpled, and bottles of wine lining the floor.

“Oh my God, Lexi?” Kate shrieks and turns the music off on my laptop.

“Turn it back on. The best part didn’t come yet.” Kate crosses her arms in front of her chest and stares at me. “Cooooommmmmeeeee ooooooon,” I drag each letter longer than necessary. “If you don’t want to dance, drink and smash things with me, then bye, Katie,” I wave bye-bye to her with my hand, jump off the bed and turn the song back on.

Yes, I’m drunk.

Yes, I’m breaking things.

Yes, I was just a bitch to my best and only friend.

But guess what?

I freaking deserve it.

I deserve to let loose and drink two—no, wait, three—bottles of wine. Was it three?

Shit, maybe I drank too much. To my defense, they were the smaller kind. Not that it helps. My dance-off music stops again, and this time Kate turns off the laptop completely.

“Get down, and tell me what the hell is going on?” She sounds angry. “Is it about—”

I jump off the bed fast, tripping on the rumpled sheets, and press my hand to her mouth, cutting what she was about to say just now.

“Shhhh,” I lift up a finger to my own lips. “Shhhh, we don’t speak his name here,” I whisper. “Mmmkay?”

All trace of anger is wiped off my best friend’s face and is now replaced with sadness, pity, and understanding.

Now, I will get a lecture from her in “I told you so.”

Oh, and I will get an even longer speech from her boyfriend. Yay me!

Ha—I snort to myself—it’s funny how roles got reversed. Not too long ago, I was the one with the lecture for her, and now she is a happy little ballerina with the man of her dreams, and I am the broken, pathetic, and used.

“Honey, please tell me what’s going on? Did he hurt you?” I shake my head. “Did he break up with you?” I shake my head again. “What then? You know you can tell me anything. Don’t shut down on me.”

“Ha, you’re one to talk!” Shit, I shouldn’t have said that. Kate looks pained, probably remembering the dark times of her ownlife, and I’m a horrible friend for bringing it up. After all, we lost a whole year of friendship due to that.

I slam into her, hugging her hard. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, Katie. Please, don’t listen to me. I’m drunk and hurt, and I didn’t mean that.”

Kate wraps her hands around me in return. “Lexi, it’s okay. I understand. But let’s talk. Trust me, nothing good comes from bottling this shit up, and, in the end, we can plot ten different ways to kill the bastard.”

I start sobbing into her shoulder, the reality finally hitting me right smack in my blindly trusting face.

“Fuck, Kate, how could I be so freaking stupid? He used me. Used me. He was never mine. It was all lies. I’m so stupid. When will I finally learn?” I am full-on wailing now.

“Don’t you dare call my best friend stupid. You were in love, and that is a whole other category for terrible choices, butttt you are not stupid.” She peels me off, takes my face into her hands, and looks at me. “Now, let’s get some food into you, shower, and sleep. You are not allowed to think about him or work or anything else. Then tomorrow you will wake up and tell me everything in detail. Okay?”

I nod, and we do just that. She distracts me with some silly childhood stories of us and makes me eat her awful food—no offense, but cooking is not Katerina’s strong suit. She helps me shower because I am all but falling down from all the alcohol in my system and tucks me into my bed.
