“This is my boss, Landon Locke,” I say.

“Awesome, what the hell is he doing here at nine PM? Isn’t the workday over?”

Landon narrows his eyes at Julius. “Alexandra’s schedule has no time limits. I can show up any time I want.” They are all but growling at each other until Kate pokes her head around.

“Um, Lex? Landon Locke as an…” she gestures with her finger, not wanting to repeat the names I call him.

Well, too bad I don’t have the same manners. “Yes, this is the evil incarnate, bosshole, asshole, and all other colorful names I’ve used, flesh and blood on our doorstep.”

Kate’s eyes go wide, and she says, “Oh, shit.”

The said evil lifts the corners of his mouth in a wicked smile. “Now, kitten, is that any way to talk about your boss?”

But Julius does not look happy at all to see this asshole at our home and doesn’t share his positivity. “I will not repeat myself. Get the hell out. Clearly, Lexi doesn’t want you here.”

Landon turns around to face Julius, and I’m afraid this will turn ugly really fast, so I interrupt whatever Landon is planning to say. “Jesus. Just come in.” Oh, crap, did I really just invite him into my home?

Yep, I totally did, and the smirk on his delicious face turns almost wicked.

Delicious face?Really Lexi?

I am never drinking again. Ever.

I lead Landon up the stairs with a mad, growling Julius stalking close behind us.

I never thought I’d want an older brother until Jules stood up for me just now. Feels kinda nice.

“Did you guys eat?” I ask Kate.

“Yep, Jules took me out toConte de fee; you know I can never say no to that place.” And so can’t I. It’s our favorite restaurant run by Kira Clark, the chef from God. She is the best of the best and totally my role model. Strict as hell, unfairly beautiful, and heavenly talented.

“That’s not fair,” I fake pout to them. “You didn’t even think to invite me?” I talk to my friends and pretend that a certain bosshole isn’t here, watching like a hawk.

Too bad! You are at my home, and I will behave as I want. Not that I do anything else at work.

“If I’d known you would get unwelcome guests, I would invite you as well. Also, I had no idea you would finally be home before one AM,” Julius says while retrieving a bottle of beer from the fridge.

I return to making the Pad Thai and try to switch the subject, so those two don’t start bickering again.

Not that I care. I just don’t want to deal with it tonight.

“I didn’t either,” I respond to him, but Jules glares at Landon.

“The very least you could do is make sure she gets home safe!” He tells Landon, and I freeze. Jules is the epitome of overprotective when it comes to the people he cares about.

“Julius!” I use my big girl voice.

“Babe drop it, please,” Kate pleads to him, sensing the rising tension.

“Not that I should explain myself to you, but I had no idea Alexandra was staying in the office that late. I never told her to do that.”

“Aha,” Julius responds and takes a cigarette out of the box.

“No, no, and no. Not while I’m cooking. You know that.” I glare at him.

“Fine,” he growls and goes outside to smoke.

“Um, I’ll go…do something…there…” my best friend stutters and hastily gets up to run away. She has grown quite a backbone in the last few years while dealing with her demon but facing mine is too much for Kate, and I can’t blame her. I’d like to run away from him as well.
