“This is different,” I say sadly. “Anyway, you and Julius should join us for dinner.”

“Um, you think it’s a good idea? Remember the last time those two were together in the same room?”

“Oh, for Pete’s sake, they are two grown men and can deal with it. So, yes, join us.”

“Okay,” she says and leaves to call her boyfriend.

An hour later, there is a knock on our door, and I rush over to open it.

Jesus, you’d think we haven’t seen each other for weeks instead of a few hours with how Lan pounced on me as soon as he took a step inside. My breath catches just like it does every time I see this man in a suit. Or without. I’m not picky.

But the smile he flashes me when he sees me is worth so much more. Seeing this man sincerely smile is like seeing a double rainbow or, better yet, a unicorn. Wow, it makes me happy that I had something to do with that. That I was the reason he shed the bosshole façade and put a crack in that thick armor of his.

“Come in,” I say, and he leans in to kiss me while picking me up from the floor.

“Never leave me again for such a long time, Miss Ellis. I don’t know how I have survived in that office alone.”

“Oh my goodness, stop, you big baby,” I say and kiss him back eagerly, and then I whisper, “I missed you too.” Which makes him kiss me harder and deeper.

“Say that again,” Landon demands.

“I missed you, Lan.”

“Fuck, Kitten, can we skip the dinner and go straight for dessert?”

“No, and no,” I jump off him and tug his hand to follow me upstairs into our kitchen. “We have company tonight. Jules and Kate will eat with us as well.”

“The scary biker dude? Lexi, are you thirsty for my blood after all?” He jokes.

“Behave!” I warn him, and we walk in hand in hand to see an excited Kate and a scowling Julius.

“You too!” I point to Jules.

“What? I didn’t do anything. Yet,” he narrows his eyes at Landon but shakes the hand that he stretches out to him.

“Let’s just have a nice dinner. Okay?” I ask everyone.

My friend, the saint, jumps in and starts a friendly conversation with Landon, and I mouth ‘thank you’ to her.

“Kitten, when did you have the time to do all this?” Landon asks as I set the plates in front of us. I made a steak with baked potatoes and a fresh mixed salad. As well as some appetizers and fresh tomato bruschetta.

“I’m efficient with my time,” I wink at him, immediately remembering that we are not alone. Yikes, it’s tough to be surrounded by people when we spent our time just the two of us in our little corner of the building.

I need to set a filter in my mouth.

“Oh, I know you are,” he winks back. “But you should’ve just ordered something. I didn’t want you to tire yourself out with this.”

“Don’t worry, I like cooking, especially for important people.”

“Oh? I am important people?” He asks with a grin.

“Nope,” I make a pop sound on the P. “Kate and Jules are. You are just lucky to be included,” I answer with an innocent face, and he all but tackles me at the table.

“You little tease. I’ll show you important later!” He threatens me with a heavy sexual innuendo barely hidden in his voice, and I can’t help the laugh that escapes me.

Crap, we forgot we are not alone. Again. Jules clears his throat loudly. “Landon, what are your intentions with Lexi?”

“Jesus, talk about an icebreaker,” I say to him.
