“Then what was it? Please don’t tell me you picked up some other gig to get us through the price increase for mom’s care.”Sophie’s eyes look pained and pleading for me to say no. She hates that she can’t contribute to our finances and has to live with us on top of that. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“No, nothing like that. My boss just wanted me to attend an event with her last night.”

“All night?” Sophie sounds skeptical.

“Yep.”

“Just with her?”

“Nope.”

“Yeah, those one-word answers are not suspicious at all, Vas.”

“Relax, Soph. I am good. We are good, and there is nothing crazy going on.”Well, apart from me being in a fake relationship with my boss and possibly having to live at her house for God knows how long. Oh, and now I have been dying to know if she tastes just as good as she smells. How well she would take my cock and how loud she’d scream my name.

But yeah. Nothing crazy is going on.

Thank God, none of that actually comes out of my mouth. It is insane enough that I think it. Want it. Crave it.

“Daddy, are you going to come to my play at school?” Vee breaks my ridiculous train of thought that I should not be having. Especially since I am not just some single guy looking for a good time.

“Play?” I asked her, scrunching up my forehead in search of the time she told me about this before.

“Yeah, I was picked to play a snowflake in our Christmas show at school. Can you believe that, dad?” Her eyes are wide with pride and so much excitement, I feel it seep into me as well, and I run over to where she is sitting, scooping her up in my arms and twirling us around the tiny living room.

“That’s amazing, Angel. I am so happy and proud of you! You will make the best snowflake.” I give her a loud kiss on her rosy cheek.

“Does that mean you will help me make the costume and come watch the play?”

“Of course, I will,” I state with deep-rooted confidence because the sky could be falling down that day for all I care, but I will go to my daughter’s first play. “Now, are we thinking a fuzzy snowflake or one of those icy ones?” I ask her, and she puts her tiny finger to her mouth, pondering my question.

“Can I be a mermaid snowflake?” she asks me.

“I don’t think there is any snow in the ocean, Angel.”

“Oh.” Her spirits dampen, and I instantly kick myself for being the cause of that. Who the hell cares about reality when it sucks so badly?

“You know what? You will be the first mermaid snowflake in the sea. The most special one.”

“Really?” Her blinding smile is back as she wiggles happily in my arms.

“Yep.”

“You are the best daddy ever! I will kiss you forever now.” She wraps her small hands around my neck, peppering me with her sweet kisses all over my face as we both break out in giggles.

“Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking asking if you are seeing…well, you know what I mean. You are all wrapped around this little girl’s finger and no other one could ever slide in here,” Sophie states as she heads out the door.

A pang goes out in my chest with her words because despite Victoria being my whole life, I wouldn’t mind sharing it with someone else. I wouldn’t mind having a partner who could give me all those things I asked of Kira last night.

Song: Elvis Drew – Make Me Feel

Not ten minutes into my shift, the witch has come back to reclaim my soul.

“Levidis, my office. Now!” Kira demands without as much as looking my way, and I feel the second pang of the day.

But this one is beyond irrational.

I’ve never craved her eyes on me—or at least I have gotten really good at pretending that I don’t. Not before we started playing this little pretend game. Not before my craving for her started growing by giant heaps. It’s utterly stupid, and my already banged-up heart could never handle the wreck she would cause, but somehow, it doesn’t care.
