He is so close my skin is begging for me to reach out and touch him. To feel that rush one more time.

“What. The. Fuck. Are. You. Doing. Here?” He uses the same hushed voice the girl used before, but his is laced with venom, not pleasantries.

“What do you think I am doing here?” I don’t bother to lower my voice for no freaking reason. We are all here. Who cares if the neighbors hear us? They are already up anyway.

“Leave,” Vassar grits out.

“No.” My one word is laced with a silent challenge. A dare.

“This is not the time. We will talk tomorrow at work.”

“No. I told you, you were to come with me. I told you, you are mine, and where do I find you tonight?” My face is smiling, but there is nothing nice or sweet or remotely warm about it. “In bed with your fucking girlfriend—who, may I add, is a little too young for you—when I also told you to break it off.”

“Girlf—” the girl starts to say something, but I lift up my hand in her way, shutting her up. I don’t give a shit about what she has to say, and frankly, she seems too nice to bare my rage tonight. It takes a few years to learn how to withstand my wrath, and she is already on the edge of crying.

“Sophie, go to my room. Go sleep there while I deal with this.”

A humorless laugh leaves my lips.

“No, Sophie, why don’t you just pack up and leave forever? Come morning, this place will no longer belong to Vassar, and you will be sent on your merry fucking way anyway,” I say with a fake, sugary smile. The one I always imagine villains wear in the movies after they do something sinister.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Vassar’s head whips over to me again.

“Exactly what I said. As of eight AM, you are being evicted.” I hear Sophie gasp and clasp her hand over her mouth in horror, but my eyes don’t leave the storms raging in Vassar’s eyes. “I told you; I will make you move in with me. I gave you a chance to do this the easy way, but you chose not to. So, I did it mine. Because I always get what I want, love. You should have known better than to tempt me.”

What I don’t add is the “now” part. I always get what I want now. It’s imperial to me.

“Oh my God.” Yep. Sophie is crying, and for God’s sake, did her name have to be sweet as well?

“I. Quit. I am done playing this stupid game. Leave me alone. Leave my family alone and go undo whatever the fuck you did just now because we are not moving out of here,” Vassar spits out.

“No can do.” I pretend to be bored with his little tantrum as I stand here studying my nails. “It’s all done, and a new tenant is already moving in as soon as you leave.”

“Vas?” Sophie sends a teary question to him, and I see that tough exterior he always dons on for me crack as he takes her face in his hands, wiping away her tears, and wraps her in his arms. He is hugging her. Giving her comfort. She is touching him, and I am barely controlling myself right now.

No, screw it. There is no controlling it. I do what I want. “Step away from him,” I grit out, and she looks up to me, hot tears flowing heavier.

“Leave, Kira. Fuck, just leave me alone! You didn’t bother speaking to me the whole day, and it was the best one of my life, so let’s keep doing that!” he screams, completely losing his calm façade, and I should relish the sight. This was what I wanted for so many years, but I don’t.

I don’t because a new voice sounds over all of us.

One that shouldn’t be here.

One that I didn’t see coming.

One that says, “Daddy?”

Chapter twenty-two

Kira

Akid. He has a kid. They have a kid.

A kid.

I blink a few times, but the vision doesn’t go away. There really is a little girl with beautiful caramel hair and big eyes standing in that same doorway where Vassar was just a few minutes ago. She is standing there looking completely lost, clutching her small fluffy blanket to her chest, wearing snug pajamas.

She can’t be older than five or six years old.
