Pure, raw, explosive dopamine rushed to my brain.Itwas better than anything else that could trigger your pleasure receptors.Betterthan sexual kinks.Betterthan shopping.Betterthan drugs.Betterthan football players in tight pants.Betterthan your team winning theSuperbowl.Betterthan hot jalebis in the cold rain.BetterthanMcDonald’sfrench fries.Betterthan oxygen.Betterthan life itself.

Therewas nothing in this world that compared to a list withAxelTrimalchio.

Ilaughed and screamed hysterically. “Gofaster.Heis getting away,”Ishouted at the cabbie.

“Whois getting away?” he shouted back, unsure who we were chasing.EvenIhad lost account of the carIhad asked him to follow.

Itwas thenIfelt his gaze again, that distinct feeling of being watched.Itwas coming from the right, and the way goosebumps lined my arms,Iknew he was in my direct peripheral.

“Thecar to my right,”Isaid breathlessly. “Followthat car.”Turningmy head,Ilooked straight into a car with tinted glasses.Hewas inside,Iwas sure of it, and watching me intently. “Followthat car,”Irepeated.

Thecabbie didn’t argue and pursued the black car as it veered through traffic.Evenbefore the car took the exit,Iknew where we were going.

“ShouldIkeep following?” the cabbie asked as we drove away from the city.

“Hell, yes.”

Wekept speeding, butIwouldn’t let my eyes dart back to the black car.Iknew, without a doubt, that his eyes were watching me.Assoon asIsaw the sign forChateauat theHempstead, my heart rate picked up.

“Faster,”Itold the man who was already flying through the streets over the speed limit. “Inthere.”Ipointed toward the private venue, knowing we were about to trespass and scratch off the last item on our list.

Shovinga bunch of cash in the cabbie’s hand,Iran out of the car with myPradacrossbody bag slung across my chest.Isaw the black car but knewAxelwasn’t inside.Hehad a leg up on me as he’d arrived a few minutes earlier, and thoughIdidn’t see which way he had gone,Iknew where he was waiting for me.

“Miss, stop right there.Youcan’t be here.”Iturned to see a security guard from a distance.Hepointed at me, signaling for me to halt in place. “Thisis private property,” he yelled.

Itook off at manic speed, ditching my heels when they became a nuisance.Iheard the man calling the cops, butIdidn’t stop running untilIwas at the sandy beach and until the green light at the end of the dock came into view.

Atall figure was overlooking the water.Icouldn’t make him out from a distance, but when he turned, a chill ran down my spine as our gazes finally clashed.Dark, unforgiving eyes stared back, dead set against giving away their secrets.

Iwalked in a trance, hearing nothing else and seeing nothing else other than those liquid pools of darkness harvesting my soul from me.Thehot sand under my feet pulled me toward the center of the earth, but the resistance was no match, for he pulled me toward him without my permission.

Iheard the whistle from the security guards as they screamed at us.Fora second, my attention threatened to deviate, but he distracted me with one sentence, “Hi,Princess.”

Securityguards and the venue owners were now outside, all screaming toward us to get off their property and saying that they had called the cops.

Ismirked. “Hi,Princess; that’s allIget after finally finishing this insane list?Seemssomewhat anticlimactic after,”Iwaved toward the security man running toward us, “all the chaos.”

Heraised an eyebrow. “Whatdo you propose instead?”

“Thereneeds to be something more official as a celebratory means.Perhapssomething that seals the deal.”

Awolfish grin spread over his face.

“Youknow, something like—”

Axelclosed the distance between us, wrapping a hand around my throat and tugging me to him for an unforgiving kiss.Iwas unprepared, though my arms snaked around his neck by the time his tongue invaded my mouth.Histongue was just as lewd asIremembered and took what he wanted like a man starved.

Wecould hear the fast-approaching steps of the security guards, but neither of us let go.Iwas ready to be his prisoner for five-hundred nights, five-thousand nights, and all the nights to come afterward.

Weboth felt it when the guards grabbed our elbows, tugging to tear us apart and screaming,“Youneed to stop this nonsense.”

Someonemust have tackled us to the ground out of frustration from their inability to break the kiss.Asour sides collided with the sandy beach,Iheard continuous yelling.“Willyou guys cut it out?”

Axel’sheat embraced me into a cocoon against his chest, keeping me safe from external threats.Still, he didn’t break the kiss.Ihad no idea what was happening outside of his tight hold, nor didIbother opening my eyes.

Ifelt it when the salty waves crashed onto our bodies and soaked us.Still,Ididn’t pry open my eyes, staying in the world we had created with each other where no one else could touch us.

Axelnever disconnected our lips, kissing me with the same ferocity as three grown men screamed, trying to pull us apart.Itwouldn’t happen.Wewere already inside our world where only the sounds of guitar and piano mattered, where the thrill was never-ending, and where we had preserved our love for eternity.
