“Hey, you two!” A shout makes us jump apart. “Not in one of my booths. Take it somewhere else. This isn’t a make-out spot!”

Madison’s mom completely kills the mood, and I want to throw the bench at her. Now Sam’s embarrassed and her walls are back up.

I smirk to myself as I remember the incident.

The flight attendant serving me smiles seductively, thinking I'm showing her some interest. But I look away. As long as Samantha will be mine again, I won’t need any meaningless relationship with another woman ever again.

As I'm coming from the hotel gym, my phone buzzes. It's Jaxson.

“Hey Jax, what's up, man?” I answer.

His voice holds some excitement as he says, “Asher, you back in town?”

“Yeah, I got in last night from Chicago,” I tell him as I let myself back into my hotel room.

“Listen, I have some plans drawn up for the old place. The guys and I are going to meet up later and iron it out. Are you up for stopping by?” I can hear machinery in the background, and I wonder if he is with Knox.

“Sure man, what time?” I ask, wondering if I'll have time for a quick shower and a bite to eat.

Jax hums as he thinks about my question. “Since you just got in, I'll give you about two hours, how about that?”

“That's fine, see you later,” I agree.

But instead of hanging up, Jax says, “Hang on, Knox has something to say.”

“Hey, Asher?” Knox’s voice takes on a cautious tone. “I bumped into your old man in town. He asked for you.”

I scrub my hand over my face. “I can’t deal with his negativity right now. And I sure as hell don’t need to hear how I need to improve my game and that I should be back at practice.”

Knox curses. “Come on man, you're a star athlete with your own business. What more does he want? He sure as hell never achieved as much. You deserve everything in the world, man. You're awesome!”

“Thanks, Knox. I'll be there in a bit, buddy,” I say, hanging up.

Three hours later, I'm at Mrs. Kendall’s house, and Knox, Jaxson, and I are each three bottles of beer in, and the talks of designs, plans, and budget are over.

Knox says he has to get home before Callum sends out a search party, and we make fun of him that he is whipped.

Knox flips us the bird. “Fuck you. I have a warm loving body to go home to tonight, while the two of you will have to use your hands for the evening.”

Jaxson wiggles his eyebrows. “Not Asher. Millionaire playboy superstar here just has to look at a piece of ass and she goes running to his bed.”

I shrug. “I don’t know about that. I kind of want to see if things can work with Sam.”

They all go quiet and I brace myself for the storm.

“About damn time. I’ve never seen a more perfect pair—it's sickening, really,” Jaxson says, gagging playfully.

Knox scoffs. “You two are great together, obviously, but Callum and I are the poster boys for a perfect couple. You could actually learn a thing or two from us.”

We snicker together like teenage girls. “Thanks for your support, guys,” I say, raising my bottle for a toast. “I just have to convinceherof that.”

Chapter Nine

SAMANTHA

Kylie and I are together with Madi at her mom’s bakery, enjoying sweets, treats, and some coffee goodness for lunch while we catch up.
