“We just started the movie.”

He smiled at her, glancing up at the movie and then back to the girls. All his worry from the morning was gone. He pulled Ayla close, deciding he just had to accept what he was given right now. He didn't know what the future held, but he wasn't going to let it distract him from what he had now.

When Ayla lost interest in the movie and went looking for a snack, it was finally just the two of them. Her stomach knotted with nerves. They hadn’t talked at all about their romantic connection yesterday, and she wasn’t sure what he might have to say.

“Good day at work?” she tried, filling the silence.

He nodded. “It was fine. I thought perhaps we could grab dinner together tonight.”

It threw her for a loop, and she blinked, staring at him with a confused expression. Didn’t that go against everything he said about no partner? Then again, didn’t them fucking do that as well?

She opened her mouth to say something, but nothing formed. She snapped it shut. She should enjoy this time with him. She had no idea what the future held, but it wouldn’t be anything if she said no.

She didn’t want to put the brakes on whatever was brewing between them, even if it was the only thing that made sense. She wanted more of him. She wanted to hope that maybe, someday, it would lead somewhere, no matter how unlikely that seemed right now.

“What about Ayla?” she asked.

“I already made plans with a neighbor. She has a girl Ayla’s age, and they’ve had a playdate already. We can grab a bite to eat and be back by bedtime.”

She chewed on her lip, unsure, but when he smiled at her, she found herself unable to tell him no. She was falling, and there was no stopping it.

While Axur took Ayla to the neighbor and then went to shower, she changed into something nicer. She didn’t have much for clothes but found herself a decent black dress to wear and grabbed some diamond earrings to go with it.

She pulled her hair back, pulling the top half up and leaving the bottom down. She applied a simple layer of makeup and took a step back, scrutinizing herself. She couldn't remember the last time she dolled herself up.

She turned and found Axur waiting at her door. He had his arms crossed as he leaned on the doorway, his eyes on her.

His eyes scanned her, and it made her stomach erupt in butterflies. She loved the way he looked at her like he was a starving beast that wanted to devour her whole.

She suddenly felt hot, and her mind slipped back to the other night. It was like she could feel his hands skimming over her skin, forcing moans out of her. His touch sparked something deep in her that needed to be released.

"Are you okay?" he asked, snapping her back to reality.

She swallowed and nodded. She looked away, patting at her dress, suddenly feeling a pool forming between her legs.

“Do you like it? I don't know what the dress code is at this place we’re going.”

“It’s lovely,” he said. “You’ll fit in just fine.”

She shrugged, grabbing her shoes from the floor.

“I didn’t bring that much but packed this in case we had something important to wear it to. Growing up, my dad dragged me to meetings and functions all the time that required a certain dress code.”

Her mind at the time had gone to a funeral. She'd attended plenty growing up. She knew the likelihood was low, but she figured she should pack it. The dress worked for many things, including a night out.

“You look nice,” she said, taking in his dress pants and the crisp blue shirt.

His hair was combed back, and she smelled his aftershave. She ached to run her fingers over his muscles again but pulled her hands behind her back.

She needed to get her mind out of the gutter. They slept together, so what? That didn't mean it was going to happen again. Sure, she wished it did, but they were going out for dinner. He wasn't going to mount her on the table.

“Where are we going?” she asked, clearing her throat.

“There is a nice place a couple of blocks down that serves excellent food.”
