He stepped back, and she moved, stepping past him down the hallway. She took a deep breath to calm her nerves. It was just a simple dinner, nothing more.

Yet, she didn’t feel it was that. She felt there was more. At least, she hoped there was.

They drove to the restaurant, and she was taken aback by the beauty of it. It was a simple building with shrubs in the front, but from the side, she saw a glass dome where people dined under sparkling lights, and with the moon high in the sky, it was like a romantic scene out of a storybook.

“Wow,” she said, her mouth dropping open slightly.

“Just wait until you get inside,” he said, chuckling.

He rounded the vehicle as her door opened automatically, and he offered her a hand. Once outside, he placed a hand on her back and led her inside. She couldn’t help the butterflies that formed in her stomach. She found herself leaning into him, hoping that the night would go on longer than expected.

She knew they couldn’t ever be anything. The relationship had an expiration date since it could never progress to marriage, but why not enjoy it while she could? When she returned to Earth, she wanted to look back on this and smile. She wanted to know she enjoyed herself.

Axur opened the door, letting her step inside first. She took in the opening. Plants were everywhere, with soft mist spraying all around. The atmosphere was warm but not muggy.

“Table for two. I have a reservation,” Axur said, giving a smile.

“Your table is this way.”

Axur placed his hand on her back, turning her. They headed past tables of people deep in their own dinner and conversations. Soft jazz music floated through the air, and the hostess opened a glass door to the dome area.

Inside, it was quieter, and though they could hear people talking, it was too far away to hear. They were given a table in the back corner.

“Your waiter will be with you shortly,” he said, smiling at them before he turned.

They each took their seats, and she looked at Axur with wide eyes.

“This place is amazing, and I’m surprised it isn’t more packed.”

He chuckled. “It normally is, but on nights like this, it’s for VIPs only.”

“You’re a VIP?”

He nodded. “I like the food here.”

She smirked, unable to help how different he sounded. He wasn’t like the normal military guys she’d known, but then again, her father was a sharp man. She couldn’t even hate him for it. He was doing what he was raised to do.

She shook her head. “So, how is work going?”

Axur looked at her for a moment, and she gave him a smile.

“Sorry, I used to listen to my dad talk about work all the time. It’s normal for me.”

He chuckled. “You want to hear how I made one of my men run so much he threw up?”

She shrugged. “To me, that’s what love looks like.”

He laughed lightly as the waiter came to take their order. She let Axur order for her since he seemed to know what was good, and everything on the menu sounded amazing.

“Really, we don’t have to talk about my work,” he said as the waiter walked away. "It's boring."

“I have no problem with it. Besides that, how was it?”

She listened as Axur told her about his day. He seemed happy about all the hard work he did. She was sure not to ask him too many detailed questions or anything about the other night. It seemed neither of them was sure how to go about it.

“How was Ayla?” he asked, taking a drink of his water.

She reached for the communicator he had given her in case of emergency and showed him a video of Ayla playing golf. They had been trying to do different things each day, and golf was the activity that day.
