Bella’s tears seem to pour faster. “R-roisin. I’m so sorry.”

“Sorry for what? Bella, what’s going on?”

“H-he said he would hurt my f-family.”

My blood runs cold as the pieces fall into place. I step away from her as if electrocuted. “What did you do?”

“I’m so sorry,” Bella cries feebly, hugging herself around the middle.

It feels like my world is crashing around me. Bella and Felicity, our apartment, Juilliard… They were supposed to be safe. They were supposed to be my escape from all this.

Has there been a single fucking person in my life that hasn’t lied to me?

I grit my teeth. “Does Felicity—”

“No!” Bella says with startling ferocity. “I made her go home.”

“So you’ll protect her, but not me?”

Bella stands there pathetically. “Roisin… you’re part of the Mafia. People have died because of you.”

I’m already shaking my head as I back away from the woman I once considered my best friend.

“You have no idea what you’ve done,” I hiss at her. “Get out of my sight.”

“Roisin, please–” Bella tries to take a step closer.

I cut her off with a glare. “Fuck off.”

It’s like my words suddenly flick a switch within her. Bella’s back straightens, and the tears immediately stop flowing. She dabs her face with the palms of her hands as she sighs.

“Fine.” Bella suddenly sounds bored and I almost flinch at the shift in her tone. “Just remember, you brought this on yourself.”

I can feel the sting of my nails biting into my palm. “Excuse me?”

“He told me what you did,” Bella continues, swaying past me to the mirror to adjust her makeup. “I know you killed someone, Roisin.”

“I never—it was self-defense!” I scramble to get the words out.

“What, protecting your assassin boyfriend?”

I watch in horror as Bella turns to face me again. “Do you seriously think you had any right bringing him into our home? Did you even think about what might happen to me or Felicity if we got caught up in your mess?”

“Bella—”

“Don’t,” she hisses. “This is your fault. My parents have been missing for days.”

My eyes widen in horror. “We’ll find them, I promise you. I’ll make sure they’re safe.”

Bella merely sneers at me. “Forgive me, but I don’t trust a single fucking thing that comes out your mouth.”

With that, she marches over to the door to make her exit, only to pause before she pushes it open. “Good luck. If you survive this, I never want to see you again.”

The door slams behind her.

Leaving me alone and feeling emptier than I’ve ever felt before. Her betrayal is like a punch to the gut. Bile begins to form in my mouth, and I take a cautionary step toward a cubicle, praying that I don’t suddenly hurl my guts up on top of everything else.

How long has Bella been conspiring against me? Just this morning, she bounced on my bed and braided my hair like everything was fine. But Padraic must have gotten to her long before—at least if her parents have been gone for days.
