“I’m not going to squeeze you like a marshmallow.”

“Stop reading my thoughts, Blondie!”

Her squeezing tactic is working; I can feel all the blood rushing to my head. Instead of splattering against the wall.

“My name’s Kate.”

I fall asleep again. I know this because I’m no longer being squeezed like a marshmallow. Also, I know this because I’m at the top of a clock tower.

“I think I’m in Ireland,” I say to no one, even though the ground below is murky and unclear, and there’s nothing really around me that proves I’m in Ireland. But I just have this feeling that maybe I am.

Don’t fall asleep again!

I’m not asleep; I’m in Ireland.

I look again below. No! I’m at Arnie’s house, I know that murky carpet. This clock is in Arnie’s house. I remember it from when I was painting there with Angus. I wonder if Angus is still here somewhere?

See, I am good at remembering things.

Roisin, I swear to God.

“Whaaaaaaaatttttt?” I whine. “Just let me find Angus.”

“We’re not finding Angus. We’re finding Arnie,” Kate replies as she pulls me through the cold room.

My feet are being slow, but I do a really good job of not standing on a man’s head.

“I’m dreaming of dead people, Kate.” I laugh. I’d be so spooked if I were a kid. But as an adult, I’ve actually seen a few dead people now.

“You’re not dreaming. Come on.”

“I’m not spooked,” I tell her, just in case she thinks I am. I don’t want her to worry. Also, she has really cool black clothes.

“I know. You’re tougher than you look.”

“Maybe if we become friends, I could borrow your really cool black clothes.”

“You said that already, Roisin.”

Oh no, I’m going in circles again. She’s going to think I’m really not cool.

“You’re doing great, Roisin.” Kate pulls me up toward the door. “I think you’re really cool. But you know what would make me think you’re even cooler?”

“What?”

“There are two things, do you think you can remember?”

“I’m really good at remembering.”

“You are,” Kate says in a really nice way. I think I trust her, actually. “Do you remember how many things there were to remember?”

That’s easy. “Two.”

“Well done. Okay, number one,” Kate holds up my pointer finger to my face. “Number one is don’t fall asleep.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re very high and it’s safer if you’re conscious.”
