“I thought I was going to lose you,” she whispers into my hair. “It was rough for a while back there.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“It’s not your fault.”

“I’m sorry you had to go through that, then,” I clarify, causing her to huff out a laugh.

She pulls away, wiping her tears away as she does. “You’re ridiculous.”

“Missed you too,” I tease back.

Aimee rolls her eyes humorously. “You have no idea.”

I squeeze her hands before letting go, leaning back on the bed. Suddenly, I was overcome with a wave of exhaustion.

“So, what’s the diagnosis, doc?”

“Let me check,” she pulls away to examine her notepad. “Ah yes, an inflated sense of ego, irritable personality disorder, and terrible taste in men.”

I jolt up in alarm. “Arnie! Is he here?”

Aimee pushes me back down into the bed. “You need to rest.”

“Aimee.”

“Yes, he’s here,” she concedes with a sigh. “Barely been able to keep him out of here.”

I open my mouth, but Aimee cuts me off.

“Not until you’ve slept a bit more, your body is in shock. You need to make sure you’re looking after yourself and not jumping headfirst into big, emotional conversations.”

“That’s literally what happened between us!”

Aimee purses her lips. “Well, that was fine because I’m your doctor.”

“Let me see him!”

“No!”

“Let me–”

The doors burst open with a bang.

Standing there, looking suspiciously like he’s just woken from a nap, is a scruffy, exhausted-looking Arnold Knight. His hair sticks out in odd places, his shirt looks like it hasn’t been ironed, and I’ve never been so attracted to him.

His dark eyes meet mine in an instant, and I can see the relief wash over him. His brow softens, his shoulders slump, and he begins walking to me as if in a trance.

I can’t blame him. I’d crawl to him if I needed to.

“How did you–” Aimee begins.

“Aisha told me you’d woken up,” Arnie cuts her off, answering her question but addressing it to me.

Aimee begins muttering to herself, something that sounds suspiciously like: “Why are Italians so dramatic?”

My eyes rake over his entire body. “Are you alright? Are you hurt?”

Arnie barks a laugh just as he reaches my side. “I think I’m the one that gets to ask that question first.”
