“Aimee, I dated him.”

“Shit,” she parrots back.

Arnie tenses up behind me. I can practically feel the hostility radiating from him at this revelation. “What does he want?”

“To reconnect, maybe?” Aimee sounds like she’s not completely convinced by that answer. “But I wanted to give you a heads up.”

“Thanks,” I glance at Arnie’s stony expression. “Listen… I’m gonna need to call you back. Arnie looks like he might pass out if I don’t explain everything to him.”

“Okay. I’m sorry again for interrupting!” Aimee gushes.

“No, I’m glad you called. And thank you for telling me.”

“Speak to you soon, Roche.”

The line goes dead, and I wait for the questions with bated breath.

“Jack’s brother, ey?” Arnie says quietly.

“I didn’t know, okay?” I burst out in a frenzy. “It was back in L.A., and we hung out a bunch of times, but there was nothing really going on. I don’t think I ever introduced him to Aimee, even. We broke up before things could get serious because we were moving to New York, and I wanted a fresh start. Are you okay? I feel like you’re not okay.”

Arnie’s shoulders sag, and he lets out a low chuckle. “Roisin, it’s fine. Look at me,” he pauses to tilt my head up to his. “I’m your husband. You think I care about some guy you dated years ago?”

I flinch a little. “More like eighteen months.”

“Hey, I’m not going to judge you on your dating history, okay? As long as this,” he kisses my forehead affectionately, “is all you care about, I’m happy.”

“Okay,” I say with a sigh, hearing the truth in his words.

He pulls me back into bed, assuming our previously entwined position. “Besides, I think we might have some bigger fish than Jack’s brother when we get home.”

I grimace a little. “Between the cartel and my brother gunning for us, it’ll be hard to catch a break.”

“You’re forgetting about Padraic.”

“I wish I could,” I mutter. “Maybe we should hide out in a bunker like Aimee and Jack.”

“You’re kidding, right?” Arnie teases. “We just got married! I want to show off my wife to anyone who’ll listen.”

I giggle at his ridiculousness, allowing it to fill me with a warming sensation that penetrates deep within my soul.

“Hey, whatever happens, at least we have each other, right?”

“Until the bitter end.”
