I raised my gaze and noticed some of the nurses staring at me. I wasn’t in my assigned office. I just sat in the waiting area, pondering my thoughts. As their eyes met mine, they giggled among themselves.

There’s the proper reaction. If it was my good old Tabitha, she’d turn it to a glaring face-off.

I sound like I was complaining, but I actually enjoyed it. She would stare at me and when she had gotten enough quickly look away to hide the embarrassment, but her ears would always give her away. It was honestly very pleasing to watch.

“Is there a problem, ladies?” I asked. “You need me for something?”

“No, we just saw you lost in thought and was wondering if you were okay,” one of them offered.

“I’m okay,” I smiled at her as I got to my feet. “Thank you for worrying about little old me.”

“You aren’t old, though,” the other remarked. “You’re a fine piece of art.”

Watch it, Becca, you don’t have to be so upfront,” the first reprimanded the second.

“Hannah, look. Not everyone likes the meek girl approach,” Becca said. “Men like Dr. Jericho over here would prefer the mean, stubborn or honest type.”

“Is that what you both wanted to ask me?” I said and raised a brow.

“Basically yes,” Becca retorted. “What kind of women do you like?”

These past years, I had been focused on work and academics such that I rarely had time for romantic affairs. But if I were to pick a type…

“Younger,” I started to answer, “stubborn, intelligent, doesn’t know how to properly control emotions, leader, strong-willed, beautiful hips, and thighs. Among other things, she should be mean as well.”

“Oh, that’s a lot,” Hannah noted as she mentally replayed everything I had listed.

“I don’t think you will find anyone among the staff who ticks all those boxes,” Becca stated.

“I don’t think so,” concurred Hannah. “If you think about it, there’s only one person here who can actually fill all those requirements: Dr. Tabitha Hill.”

Now that I think about it, she actually suited the description. I was unconsciously using her as an example.

“The head doctor? Oh yeah, that makes sense,” Becca agreed. “Tough luck, Dr. Jericho, she only likes a certain kind of men. She hates a lot of them. Well, she says she doesn’t hate them, but that doesn’t explain her attitude.”

“Except Jerry,” Hannah added with a playful smile. “He was the exception.”

“Jerry?” I raised a brow.

“Ah, that’s just women gossip,” Becca said dismissively, waving her hand. “It’s all in the past.”

“I see,” I sighed.

“Well, now that is all settled,” Becca teased. She hugged my arm, pressing her bust against me. “Are you seeing anyone?”

“Not right now, no,” I answered.

“No fair. I was going to ask him,” Hannah whined. “Dr. Jericho, can we go somewhere after work?”

“I don’t think I can go out this evening,” I said. “I have my hands occupied.”

Tabitha had requested my presence before I close for the day.

“Is it work-related?” Hannah asked, “I can stay behind and help.”

“Thank you so much, but I would rather do this on my own,” I said, politely turning her down.

“It’s fine, some other time then?” Becca asked. “No, rush.”
