My phone buzzes from the coffee table, lighting up with London’s name as he tries to call me.

Seth’s gaze lands on my phone as I reach for it and silence the call. “London? Is that—?”

I flip the phone over on the coffee table and turn to face him. My heart hammers in my chest, but I know I need to come clean. At least a little.

I guess we’re doing this.

“Yeah, that’s London,” I admit, nodding. “He, um … He moved back a while ago, I guess.”

Something akin to relief flashes in Seth’s eyes and it takes me aback. He doesn’t say anything, though. Simply waits for me to continue.

“I should have told you sooner. I just didn’t know how to bring it up.”

His eyebrows flicker upward. “I guess communication was never our strong suit.”

“It really wasn’t.” As soon as the words come out of my mouth, I realize the way they sound. The finality in them.

Seth’s lips press tight, twisting to the side with the same absent nod I’ve seen for years.

How did I not know by keeping him tied to me, I was holding him back, too?

“He’s my new boss—” I blurt out.

Seth’s eyes shift to mine and confusion crosses his features.

“I mean, the event I’ve been planning … He’s the one who gave me the job,” I clarify.

“Oh,” he murmurs, his features relaxing.

Do I tell him?

Should I tell him?

“Well, that’s good. You should have someone—” Seth says, his voice breaking. “Someone who you trust. To talk to now.”

The meaning behind his words hit heavy.

I meet his gaze and the tears are back—in both of our eyes. “So, we’re …”

I can’t bring myself to say the rest.

“Yeah, I think so,” he whispers back.

The dam breaks and the tears fall. No matter what I do, I can’t stop them.

I’m sad. Sad for all that’s ending.

But there’s a little glimmer of hope—that tiny bead of light that’s guiding me into the future.

Even though I know it will be okay, I can’t help but grieve.

“Sweetie,” Seth says, reaching for me.

“No, don’t call me that. Not—not anymore.” I shake my head and shrink back from him.

I can’t. Not when we’ve decided this is over. It’ll break me in two.

His face blanches, but he drops his head and nods. After a beat, he jabs a thumb behind him. “I’m gonna … pack.”
