Finally, he nods. “I like that. I like it a lot.”

A rush of pride and excitement flow through me. But something shifts in the room, and the way he regards me—it makes me feel lightheaded.

There’s a hunger in his expression and for the life of me, I can’t remember why that could be bad.

His eyes fall to my lips and my breath hitches.

Like two magnets, we begin drawing together.

“London, Noah’s on the line. He wants an update on the event when you have a sec,” Myles calls out from the doorway.

The two of us jolt apart.

Without even waiting for a response, Myles turns and vanishes.

My soul, on the other hand, has left my body.

I sit there mortified at myself and horrified at what Ithinknearly happened.

“Sorry, Lily. I need to take this call,” London whispers, blinking away any signs of what he was thinking, or feeling, before. “He probably wants to know how the planning is going. We’ve done good here. Do you want to hang out with Myles for a few minutes while I fill him in?” London asks, as he gets up from the couch.

I nod quickly, the hypnotic spell vanishing. “Sure. Do you want me to join you?”

He shakes his head. “No, he has pretty specific contact protocols. But I appreciate the offer.”

“Oh, yeah, okay.” I nod, surprised at how that makes me feel. Like I’m still just an outsider—despite being asked to plan some pretty intimate details of this event. I raise my eyebrows and press my hand to the tops of my thighs. “I could use a drink anyway.”

An adorable lopsided grin appears on his face and he nods. Then, he makes his way out the door and down the hallway that leads to the elevator. I close my eyes, breathing slowly to release the tension, then follow after him.

“Well, I, uh—feel pretty good. Don’t you?” London questions, turning to face me while we wait for the elevator to open.

I nod, glad that he’s ignoring whatever just happened back there. I don’t know that I could handle it if he wanted to talk about it. “Definitely. We accomplished a lot. I mean, after the way today started, I’d be pretty happy just having a theme. But this is better.”

He laughs softly. “Yeah, we definitely had a colorful start to today.”

I raise my eyebrows and sigh. “Understatement of the year.”

The elevator door dings and then opens. We step in it together and London presses the button to bring us to the main floor.

“We make a good team. Even after all these years,” he says, turning to face me. His dark blue eyes hold so much in them as he stands there. It’s like the decades he’s experienced are trying to find a way to express themselves through the boldness of his irises.

There’s something in the way he looks at me that still makes me feelseen.

Truly seen.

The door dings and opens, making my insides jostle.

A curious expression flits across his features before he turns to the door and swipes his arm out. “Shall we?”

“Yeah, okay,” I say, inhaling sharply.

He waits for me to exit first and when we reach the point where he needs to veer off, he leans in and whispers, “I’ll be right back. Promise me you won’t leave before I can say goodbye.”

I nod, doing my best to smile at him and not relay just how freaked out I am.

He grins back, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. The sensation zings through me and I suck in a breath.

“Be right back.” He drops his hand and takes a step back.
