“Two things?” I question, following after him.

The kitchen smells like Chinese food and I can see why when we enter. There are takeout containers scattered across the kitchen counter.

Seth leads me to a stool at the breakfast bar and plants me on a seat.

“Let’s talk about it over dinner. Hope you’re hungry,” he says, proceeding to open the takeout boxes and grabbing two plates. Without even asking what I want, he piles food on both.

In the past, I would have thought it was endearing, but he just filled my plate up with spicy chicken—something I have never enjoyed.

He passes me my plate and some chopsticks, then takes a seat next to me.

“Thank you,” I respond on autopilot, setting everything down. Then, I turn to face him so he can continue to explain this celebratory mood.

“I’m starving,” Seth says, digging straight into his chicken.

Trying hard not to freak out, I turn back to my food and pick out the bits I’ll actually enjoy. When I’ve eaten the only edible bits, I set my chopsticks down and turn to him.

He glances over his shoulder and notices my plate. “You’re not eating.”

I shrug. “I’m not all that hungry. I want to know what’s going on.”

There’s no point in telling him I’m not a fan of the chicken. It’s been said a hundred times before and he just doesn’t take any notice.

A broad smile brightens his features and his light blue eyes—a blue that’s much lighter than London’s—dance with excitement. Part of me wonders why on earth I would even notice or compare them.

“You finally get your wish,” he says after a beat.

I narrow my eyes, confused. “What wish?”

“No more traveling.” He shrugs one shoulder. “Well, not far, anyway.”

I shake my head. “What? What do you mean?”

“I was offered a position with a new startup here in Duluth that’s featuring the scenic North Shore and all that can be done here. There will be an appand articles. They want to turn it into this really big—”

“Astartup?” I ask, cutting him off. “Isn’t that risky?”

“What do you mean?” he asks, shaking his head. His light eyebrows tug inward as he assess me.

I inhale, trying to wrap my head around what he’s said. “I mean, what happens if they don’t work out? Most startups fail. Look at how hard it’s been for me.”

“Then I go back to Ted and beg for my job back.” He chuckles softly. “I’m sure it’ll be no big deal. In fact, he’s happy for us. He knows how hard it’s been to be separated so much.”

This is something we’ve talked about forever. It’s the only thing that made sense because I can’t plan events on the road. But he can write from anywhere—obviously.

But a part of me never thought it would ever happen.

Seth loves the open road. He loves the mystery of finding a new place and exploring it. It’s practically encoded in his DNA.

“I mean, that’s great.” I shake my head, trying to chase away my worried thoughts. “It’s just…”

He narrows his eyes a bit and drops his chopsticks onto his plate. “I thought this is what you wanted. Why aren’t you happy?”

I open my mouth to speak but no sound comes out.

Thisiswhat I wanted.

Isn’t it?
