CHAPTER15

London

Myles knocks on my office door but doesn’t wait for my response before barging in and plopping down into one of my office chairs.

Mental note:I need to start closing my door. Maybe lock it, too.

“What the fuck is going on between you and Lily?” she fires off before I can even say hello.

My gaze flits from my computer screen, where I’ve been desperately trying to focus on my workload before Lily arrives, over to her.

Salty straight out of the gate, I see.

This is going to be interesting.

“What?” I ask, leaning back and grabbing my neck.

She scowls at me. “You heard me. What’s going on between you two?”

Myles's question hangs in the air for a few moments, leaving me feeling both exposed and more than a little defensive.

It’s true—there’s a strong connection between me and Lily and as much as I hate to admit it, it has nothing to do with our childhood friendship. But that’s not something I want to get into with Myles—not when I’ve decided to make it my mission to ignore it.

“Nothing,” I say, shaking my head. “We’re friends.”

“Ehhh,” Myles begins, giving me some serious side-eye.“Are you though?”

I raise my gaze to the ceiling. “What are you getting at, Myles? I have work to do.”

“I’ve been going over it in my mind since yesterday and I swear—I walked in on something,” she replies.

I drop my gaze back to her. My mouth is suddenly dry and my palms start to sweat because I know the exact moment she’s talking about.

Fuck.

I thought she missed that.

My pulse pounds in my ears as I try to come up with an explanation for what Myles might have seen.

“I don’t know what you think you saw, but there’s nothing going on. She’s the event planner for—”

“Yeah, yeah. I know what the official excuse is,” she responds with a swipe of her hand. “But I’m catching a vibe and I need to get to the bottom of it.”

“Why?” I ask, blinking hard and trying to ignore the panic clawing its way up my spine.

She kicks up her feet, letting her combat boots thunk onto my wooden desk. Then she interlocks her hands behind her head. “Because my life is boring and demand to be entertained.”

“Nice.” I pinch the bridge of my nose.

“And also,” she pulls her feet back and leans forward, “so you don’t make a mess of things.”

“Christ,” I mutter. “I told you, there’s nothing—”

“Oh, buddy. Lie to yourself all you want, but there’sdefinitelysomething.”

I shift under her scrutiny and my gaze drifts to the hallway beyond her. Where’s Cal when I need him?

Actually, what the hell am I talking about? He’d be right there cheerleading with Myles and trying to pull the truth from me.
