If only I knew just how wrong I was.

Chapter three

Mandy and Roger

It’sbeenthreeweekssince I woke up in the hotel garden, naked and cold, Roger nowhere to be found. I remember dressing quickly and wrapping myself in his coat. I asked the receptionist where to find him and was told he checked out. No messages, nothing.

I’m still shocked that Roger left without a word. He shattered my heart. I still can’t understand why he left.

Who does he think I am? Just some piece of ass? I’m so pissed off. The more I think about it, the more it makes me sick. What a Bastard.

There was a persistent knock at my door that interrupted my thoughts. I tried ignoring it, but they wouldn’t go away. I finally gave up and answered the door. Evelyn came busting in.

“Mandy. I’ve missed you so much.”

“Evelyn... you didn’t tell me you were coming. Geez, it’s only been three weeks. What’s with you?” My mind raced, struggling to push away thoughts of Roger.

“That doesn’t change the fact that I’ve missed you. Anyway, how have you been? Wait, what’s going on with you? Is anything wrong?” Evelyn asked suddenly in her usual dramatic manner.

“Huh! What do you mean?” I lied. I was having difficulty paying attention.

“Come on! Don’t you dare deny it? It’s written all over your face-you’ve been crying. What happened with your new love?” She asked.

I rolled my eyes, sat down, and took a deep breath. “There’s nothing to hide. I’ll tell you everything.”

“Wait, what do you mean? Were you planning on hiding something from me?” Evelyn asked. Her eyes nearly popped out of their socket.

“No, nothing like that. I was still trying to organize my thoughts when you got here. It’s about Roger. It’s making me paranoid. He left Milan without a word. I found out when I woke up alone in the garden.”

“He jilted you already? How dare he! Men are scum. They’ll leave you miserable and alone.” Evelyn fumed.

I paused, confused. “I don’t want to jump to conclusions. Maybe we weren’t meant to be. I want to know if he is okay and ask why he left that way.”

“If the hotel staff said he’s fine, why bother yourself? If you feel like you need to know, try reaching out. Don’t waste much time on him or let what happened to you stop you from dating,” Evelyn insisted.

I rolled my eyes. “Seriously, I’m only twenty-six, Evelyn. I’m young and have plenty of time ahead of me. I’ll find my true match. I know he’s out there.”

“Really? Are you sure? You keep telling yourself that. I know what I want - to find a rich man so I never have to work again,” Evelyn joked. We burst into a long round of laughter, the sound echoing throughout.

Another miserable week had passed. Thoughts of Roger still haunt me. I’m slowly getting over him, but it’s not been easy. During our short time together, we shared an incredible bond. More than anyone I’ve known.

I started to prepare for my morning yoga session when suddenly, nausea hit me out of nowhere. I started feeling dizzy, and an intense headache followed. I had to hold onto the door for support.

“What’s going on with me this morning?” I thought, trying hard to catch my breath. I grew worse with every second that passed.

I remained still for a few seconds to let the dizziness disappear, and the pain subside. I rose to get some ibuprofen when I felt bile rise in my throat.

I ran to the bathroom. Before I could blink twice, I vomited violently on the floor. I felt disgusted as I cleaned up the mess and brushed my teeth.

The nausea and vomiting persisted for hours- I was dry-heaving by this time. I finally felt I could get up and knew I needed to be seen by a doctor. I somehow managed to walk the two blocks to the clinic.

I walked straight to the receptionist.

“Good Morning. How may we help you?” The receptionist asked. She had a bright smile that would have typically cheered me up. I felt so terrible that it was difficult to talk.

“I need to get in to see a doctor,” I said weakly.

“You’re in luck. We just had a cancellation. You can be seen by our nurse, Cindy. She’ll examine you, take your vital signs, and let you know the next steps.”
