I took a deep breath with my hands clenched into fists. It took all my strength to keep myself from falling over.

A nurse arrived, smiled, and asked, “What seems to be the problem? I’m Cindy. I’ll be your nurse today.”

I quickly explained my symptoms. Cindy asked me to follow her to one of the exam rooms.

“Did you perhaps eat or take anything recently? Anything that could have caused you to be sick? Any new medications?” She asked, her entire attention fixed on me.

“No. I don’t take any medications, and I haven’t eaten anything unusual or different. I was fine and well until this morning. It has continued to get worse.”

Cindy took my vital signs and said I would see the doctor shortly.

Dr. Stella came into the room. “Well, let’s see what’s going on with you. I’m going to order some labs to determine what the problem could be.”

The lab tech came in and drew some blood. Cindy, my nurse, came back in. “Right now, we’ll have you wait in here. When the results are back, Dr. Stella will see you again. It shouldn’t take too long.”

I waited for what seemed an eternity, but at least I wasn’t vomiting anymore.

Cindy came back and said that Dr. Stella was ready to see me. She walked me to Dr. Stella’s office.

She motioned for me to take a seat. “Try to relax-you have nothing to worry about.”

“Sorry, I’m very nervous. Please tell me, is it serious? Do you need more tests? Do you know what it is? Geez, I tend to ramble when I’m nervous. I should ask my questions after you let me know what’s wrong. I’ll be quiet now.” I’ve completely embarrassed myself now.

Doctor Stella raised her head to look at me. She could see the anxiety that was eating me up. “It’s okay. You can calm down. It’s not something serious, relatively speaking.”

“Okay. I’m calming down and ready. What did you find in my bloodwork? What’s wrong with me? What does relatively speaking mean?”

“Yes, everything is all right. I’m pleased to tell you that you are pregnant. Congratulations! It’s early, first trimester.” Dr. Stella said.

I was shocked. I couldn’t believe my ears. I had to pinch myself to be sure I heard right. Pregnant? That’s impossible. “Are you certain? Are you sure there’s not been a mistake?”

“Yes, the test came back positive. Congratulations, Mandy,” she said, stretching her hands for a handshake. ”You’re going to be a mom!”

I stared at her hand for a few seconds. Should I accept it? When I eventually did, she muttered some words to me. I was too lost in my thoughts even to hear what she said. I stood up and found my way out of the office. I was dazed when I left the office.

Everything she said was like hearing it in a tunnel. I remember nothing except two words.’ Your Pregnant.’

Pregnant. How’d this happen? Roger. I have to find Roger at all costs. Even if it means returning to New York, then so be it. I had to find him.

“You never seem to get her out of your head. You spent only a few weeks in Milan. You’ve grown very attached to her in that short amount of time. If you like her, why did you leave without telling her?” Stefan asked, leaning back in his chair.

“But the last thing I need now is a commitment. I’m not ready for a relationship with her or with anyone. I don’t want a situation where she’d be heartbroken because of me.”

“I understand. I still feel you should’ve told her you were leaving. Imagine how bad she must be feeling at the moment. She must be feeling used and hate you so much,” Stefan said.

“So what do you suggest I do now? I’m so confused about how to make this right.”

“Well, the choice is yours to make. You have to do what you feel is right. By the way, we have a meeting to attend right now. The board’s waiting for us.” Stefan said to me. He rose to his feet. “I’ll take my leave now,” he muttered and dashed off immediately.

I took a deep breath, running my hands through my hair. I was in the most significant dilemma of my life. I don’t know the right choice to make. I heaved a sigh, picked up my glass of wine, and began walking to the elevator.

I got to the boardroom and was shocked at the disorganization that greeted me. A frown etched on my face.

“What’s going on here? Why aren’t you ready for the meeting yet?”

“I’m sorry, sir….” my administrative assistant replied softly.

“I’m sick and tired of putting up with your laziness. Shouldn’t you have made sure everything’s in place?’” I yelled as I threw the glass on the floor, shattering in pieces near her feet.
