I shrugged. “I’m sure she does, who doesn’t? Besides, she’s just gotten out of a bad relationship. I don’t want to make it worse.”

“Don’t jump to conclusions so suddenly, Roger. It’d help if you found these things out,” Bella said. “Like why she’s pissed at you.”

Bella nodded. “Don’t worry. I’m sure you can figure it out.”

I nodded, hoping she was right. I seem to suck at figuring things out.

“Good night, Roger,” she smiled at me.

“Good night, Bella.” I smiled back as she entered the room opposite mine and closed the door.

I lay on my bed, my thoughts wandering. Why didn’t she return any of my calls? Why had she felt the need to write those words on my mirror? Nothing made sense. Soon, I willingly drifted off to sleep. I allowed my subconsciousness to replay every detail of the earlier love-making.

I woke up in high spirits, starting my day early as I liked to do. I whistled while I prepared for work. Of course, Bella was still sleeping.

“Keep your voice down!” Bella yelled.

I got dressed and ignored her voice as she reluctantly got out of bed.

“Why are you so happy?”

I shrugged. “It’s going to be a great day.”

A smile formed on her lips. “You’re happy because you’ll see Mandy.”

“Hopefully, she’ll speak to me,” I said.

I arrived at my building and parked the Porsche in my reserved spot. Mandy’s car was already parked. A smile formed on my lips again as I headed inside.

As I stepped inside, the sight that greeted me was a fury of activity. The spacious factory floor buzzed with energy. The rhythmic hum of machinery could be heard. All the employees were scattered throughout the space, engrossed in their tasks.

I took my time to survey every department in the company today.

We needed a new prototype for new shoes marketed during the fall season. We could use our old prototype until they were ready. Thankfully, we still had our contract and partnership with ‘Swoosh Shoes and Athletics.’ We’d continue to market and sell those along with our new collection.

The first floor was mainly a production unit, while various sectors in the company occupied the rest of the floors. I headed up to my office.

My smile widened when I saw Mandy heading toward her office.

“Mandy,” I called out as she walked into her office, and I followed. She’s made significant changes in her office. I admired them taking mental notes of all the details.

I was immediately struck by the air of professionalism and efficiency that permeated the space. The room was tastefully decorated. A modern, sleek design that exudes elegance. “You’re designing my office like this next,” I told her.

She glared at me, taking a seat and avoiding me.

“I tried reaching you. Why’d you leave before I got back?” I asked her.

She looked at me with daggers in her eyes.

“What exactly am I to you, Roger?” she asked me suddenly.

I stuttered, trying to think of what to say, but I was at a loss for words.

“That’s what I thought,” she replied with a weak smile.

I knew it wasn’t genuine. I could see it in her eyes. She wasn’t happy. I tried to figure out if she was angry again or if it was sadness I saw.

How was I supposed to answer a question like that? I’ve not even started to sort out my feelings for her. “It’s not like that, Mandy.” I began to say, but she cut me off.
