“What happened?” I asked.

“Our dad put a lot of pressure on Roger, especially after he discovered his talent for racing. Roger was more of a trophy for my dad than a son,” Bella explained.

I ran my hand through my hair, suddenly realizing what I’d just said.

“What happened? Why was your dad like that?” I asked.

Bella shrugged, “No idea, but Roger was under constant pressure to perform. He didn’t get to grow up like a normal kid.”

“That must have sucked for him.”

“It did. He constantly tried to please our dad. Dad never seemed proud of Roger for all he accomplished. That’s why Roger vowed his kids would never go through what he went through.”

“And me saying that to him just made him feel like his dad—“ I trailed off, realization dawning on me.

“And that’s the person he doesn’t want to become.”

“Shit!” I looked at Bella.

“You have to fix this and make it right, Mandy.”

Just then, the door opened, and Stefan entered inside.

“Did you see him?” I asked.

Stefan shook his head. “He’s not in the Penthouse.”

Just then, the doctor stepped inside the room. “How do you feel, Mandy?” He asked.

“I’m feeling okay, just a little sore in my back area.”

“I would expect you’ll be sore for several days. You and the baby are both in good health. There are no restrictions except to avoid preventable falls, okay? The nurse will come in and get you discharged.”

“That’s great. Don’t worry. I’ve no plans for any future accidents. I’ll be extra cautious. I’m ready to leave now.” I said impatiently.

After getting discharged, I could only focus on finding Roger. Then I stared at Bella. “Do you know where Roger is?”

“I think I know where he might be. You’re driving Stefan, let’s go, Mandy.”

Chapter fourteen

Mandy and Roger

Weallpiledintothe car with Stefan driving and moral support. I became increasingly anxious, unsure of what we would find. It wasn’t much longer, and we pulled into a secluded area surrounded by trees.

We parked, and Bella pointed out a dirt path in front of us leading past the trees. “Just follow that path,” Bella said with certainty.

“Are you sure?” Stefan asked.

Bella nodded, “But just in case I’m wrong, we’ll wait here.”

I headed into the clearing, a hidden gem of lush greenery. Sunlight filtered through the trees, casting patterns on the ground below. It was already sunset.

In the center of the clearing was a magnificent waterfall. The water tumbled into a crystal pool. It was breathtaking. A sanctuary where time stood still, allowing escape from the world’s worries.

I was beginning to think that I’d been here. This place seemed so familiar. I believe this is where Bella brought me. I followed a stone path through the garden, where I saw Roger sitting, and my heart skipped a bit.

I texted Bella, thankful that she and Stefan had found it. I approached slowly, leaves crunching under my feet. Roger glanced up, his eyes widening in surprise. It was time to make things right between us.
