Josh nods, and we sit in silence for a few minutes.

"Listen, Sarah and Mac invited us down to Rock Springs for a few days. Dash said he has a few guys that can cover here and said we should go. Get out of town and clear our heads."

"That sounds like a good idea, actually." He says, surprising me.

I thought I'd have to do a lot more convincing. “Okay, let's do it. We'll pack our bags and go to Rock Springs in the morning."

Josh takes a deep breath and nods.

With that, we stand up, brush off the hay, and make our way back to the house. We have a lot to discuss and plan, but for now, it feels like we're finally moving forward. It's a small step, but it's progress.

Plus, getting to see one of my best friends and her family? What could go wrong?

Chapter 19

Jenna

Weareontheroad and driving to Rock Springs when my phone rings. We both tense as I pull it from my purse.

"It's Asher," I say, putting it on speaker.

"Hey, Asher," I answer.

"A little bit of a heads up would have been nice, so we could have planned to be out of the house and busy for a few days. Good lord, I've never seen Dad blow up like that."

"I'm sorry, and yeah, poor Zach was home and saw it firsthand, apparently," I say.

Josh told me all the details late last night when we were lying in bed talking. Even though I felt bad Zach was there, I was grateful he kept it to himself that he knew and that he broke it up as well.

"Yep, he called and gave us a heads up. We have been hiding out here at Granger Ranch for a few days."

"Do you think there is any chance of him cooling down?" I ask.

"I don't know. According to Zach, he was even madder after he called you. I'd say give him a few days at least."

"Well, Josh and I are on our way down to Rock Springs to spend some time with Sarah and her family. We are hoping a few days away will do us both some good," I tell him.

"It's probably best. In a few days, I'll test the waters and see how he's doing and give you a call. Hopefully, things will have calmed down." Asher says before we hang up.

Josh reaches for my hand and gives it a squeeze without saying a word. Knowing my brothers are on our side makes things easier. I won't lose all my family, and I know they will support us, even if it's from the sidelines while we deal with Mom and Dad.

I don't even get a chance to turn the radio back on before Mom calls.

"I don't know if I should answer it," I say.

"Best to hear her out."

"Hello, Mom," I answer, my tone even while trying to keep any emotion out of it.

"Sweetheart. I wanted to reach out after you had a day to calm down and see things rationally."

"Rationally? No, I am rational. What isn't rational is what Dad said to me yesterday." I’m still trying to remain calm.

"Just stop and look at this from our side. A man our age we trusted with your care growing up comes to us saying you two are dating, and he's in love with you. We start wondering what kind of grooming he did and when it started."

"Are you kidding me? Grooming? You are fucking sick. There was nothing between us until recently. No talking, touching, or inappropriate looks. I took a chance with my feelings, and Josh pushed me away. If I wasn't so persistent, we wouldn't be here right now. So, if anyone is to blame, it's me. I'd appreciate it if you stop trying to suggest anything else."

"Darling, you have to see how wrong this is..."
