"Well, not so fast. I have one more thing to talk to you about, and you might not like it as much," I tell her, and we both sit back down.

"What's that?"

"I am putting in my two-week notice," I say and wait for her reaction.

She sits there quietly for a moment before she speaks. "I hate to see you go, but to be honest, I'm shocked you stayed this long. Every time you ask to talk to me, I always braced myself. One of the other girls has been asking for more hours, so I will give your shifts to her."

Well, that was a lot easier than I thought. Before starting my shift, I had time to read a little bit and enjoy my book after all the drama. Before I can tell Josh myself, I don’t want to let everyone know I’m quitting. So, I figure I’ll tell everyone on my next shift.

Just before the dinner rush hits, Dash and Sky walk in and I give them both a hug.

"Perfect timing. I had a meeting with Dad today," I tell them, and Sky’s squeals draw everyone's attention.

Anxious to hear my news, they walk with me to the counter. While I fill her in, I make some drinks for the table I just sat. After delivering the drinks, I walk back over to them.

"This is good. And he's talking to Josh today. Oh, I'm so happy for you!" Sky says. "Now, I need some nacho fries, stat. I've been craving them all day."

Before she can sit down at a booth in my section, I ask, "Isn't it too early to have food cravings?"

"I thought so, too," Dash says, but his face lights up as he looks at Sky. I don't think it bothers him one bit.

"Josh and I were talking. I want to have a girls’ night like they do in Rock Springs. Josh said the guys could gather on the porch at his... our place. You in?" I ask.

"Of course! Who else are you going to invite?" Sky asks.

"I was thinking Natalie and Jessie, Candy and her husband North, and Austin. Who else should we invite?"

"Maybe Parker? I bet she could use a few friends right now," Sky says.

I agree with her assessment. Everything is coming together. I just hope that Josh's talk with my dad goes smoothly.

Chapter 27

Josh

AsIpullintoEvan's driveway, I check my phone again. Nothing from Jenna. I was hoping to hear how her talk went, but I guess she has to rush right into work. If it went bad, I know she would have called, so I'm hoping it was all good.

Asher's truck is here, so I'm thankful for a buffer in case this goes wrong like the last time I was here to talk to him. I walk up to the porch and knock on the door.

Evan answers, and we stare at each other for a moment before he steps back and invites me in with a motion of his hand.

"Why don't we head to my office to chat?" he says.

I follow him to the east side of the house where his office sits because he is always up early and likes to watch the sunrise. So when he built the house, he made sure his office was on this side. The master is on the west side because his wife likes to sleep in when possible.

Entering his office, nothing has changed. I take a seat in one of the leather chairs across from his desk, and he sits behind his desk. It's a power move, for sure.

He doesn't say anything at first, so I break the silence.

"Why am I here, Evan?" I ask.

"Jenna didn't talk to you?" he says, surprised.

It makes me wonder what their talk was about.

"No, she must have gone right into work, or I was out of cell service. Did everything go okay?" I ask, suddenly worried.

"I would like to think so. I'm just shocked you haven't talked to her. Well, I’ll get started. When I was watching you two at the rodeo, I saw the situation through different eyes. You took care of her and put her needs first. As a father, that is all I ever wanted was for a guy to treat her like a princess."
