Page 13 of Expecting in Oceans

“Hey, you don’t pick me up. I’m a Protector,” I said, completely caught off guard.

The only time I let anyone pick me up like that was during fight training. It was a small miracle for him that I was able to stop my instinct to defend myself.

“I could’ve seen this coming from across the ocean,” he said. “You should be more careful. You could’ve ended up in that fire.”

The bonfire drifted away along with the sound of the celebration as Ari carried me from the crowd. He stared ahead and didn’t acknowledge my unyielding gaze at the side of his face, and the breeze carried his close scent straight into my lungs, stunning me even more. I wasn’t prepared for any of this, particularly not the strange, swirly feeling in the base of my stomach. Had I had too much luyu to drink? I knew I could handle my spirit, but this wasn’t Othos brew.

Ari brought me around the house and opened the sliding front door with his foot. He set me down on the polished wood floor and lit a lamp. Its light glowed against the many columns that stood like guardians in the house’s entryway—ancient totems to the ancestors of the Blue Fin clan. The dragons carved into the columns seemed to move in the lamplight like they were alive and keeping watch.

“Wait here while I get my kit,” he instructed.

“I’m not going anywhere,” I said and stretched out my leg so that my tender foot was off the floor.

I stared around at the ancestor totems and found myself unable to look into their carved, bulbous eyes. There was a lot of power here.

Or I was just drunk.

Ari returned carrying a box, and he sat down across from me and gently placed my foot into his lap.

“This shouldn’t take more than a minute,” he said.

“Only a minute?” I said. “Is that all you can manage?”

He exhaled sharply—so close to a laugh. “I think you’ve had too many cups of luyu, Istil.”

“I might say I’ve had just the right number of cups of luyu, Ari. And you came dashing over rather quickly. Were you watching me?”

“With all the times you looked over at me, I’m surprised you didn’t notice.”

I felt a flush of heat—embarrassment, and everything else. I turned my hips in the hope that I could quickly disguise the excitement rising beneath my robe.

“Stop moving,” he said and cleaned my foot with a damp cloth.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Of course you do. I was watching the dance and I saw how your focus was wandering. I knew I had to keep an eye on you. Am I that much of a distraction? I thought we’d settled this whole disagreement.”

“You seemed far more interested in chatting than you were in watching the dance,” I said.

Ari dabbed liquid from a blue bottle onto a fresh cloth. “What are you talking about?”

“The omega,” I said. “You shared their drink.”

“You mean Atrus? My cousin?” he said as he swiped the tender flesh with the cloth. “Istil, am I mistaken, or is that jealousy I hear in your voice?”

It stung for a moment, just like the embarrassment I felt at my complete misread. I quickly tried to divert from the plain fact that I’d been caught.

“Not at all. I simply thought you were wanting to see more Othos dances.”

“I didn’t realize my attention meant so much to you.”

And apparently, I didn’t either. What was wrong with me? Just a few hours ago I was fully prepared to fight this alpha, and now I wanted…

What? What did I want?

Had Ari truly not been on my list? Or had I been ignoring just how deliciously attractive he was, and how badly I wanted him to show me what it was like to be fucked by an alpha sea dragon?

I could feel the warm slick between my legs, dripping from my entrance across the back of my balls. My erect cock was barely being hidden by the folds of my robes in my lap.
